Replacement Of Factory Gas Cap

I have read that a lot of the aftermarket gas caps are not holding pressure. Just incase anyone has replaced theirs, I'm posting this. ;D ;D

I replaced mine , but with the chevy locking cap from the dealers parts dept., since the fuel door does not lock. Have had no issues.

Hi Ahhnuld,
What was the part number of the GM locking gas cap? I went to the local Chev dealer and the parts dept didn't have a listing for the Avy.
Thanks, Dr. T

OK, here is the Locking gas cap from GM.
GM part# 12497880. I have had this on the truck for 6500 miles and have had no problems at all.

Ahhnuld or others,

Does the factory locking cap use your ignition key, or a different key? I hate to carry an additonal key.

Is there an aftermarket kit for remote fuel door control? It would eliminate the need for a locking cap.

Ahhnuld,
Thanks for the locking gas cap part number. Just ordered mine from the local Chevy dealer.

The cap comes with an adiitional key, I'm afraid. If you do find a aftermarket cap that will accept your ignition key, you may have a venting issue that will set off you warning light. This came from the dealer.

does the locking gas cap have a tether to secure it to the truck or will it be left on top of the gas pump when i drive off? dennis

Funny, when I went to the dealer last night the guy at the service department was trying to convice me that the locking gas caps are a bad idea.

Is it possible to siphon gas out of the AV?

From discussing other options for the AV with him, I came to the conclusion that he is just really lazy and doesn't want to sell anything. :6:

I'll probably give up on the dealership and try one farther afield.

Ahhnuld - thanks very much for the part number.

I just ordered one at gmpartsdirect.com Price $26.15 including shipping.

I figure this Supermobile is so beautiful it is worth carrying an extra key to protect her fuel supply.

I assume the cap will fit inside my billet fuel door. :B:

Yes it will fit.

I know that Steelhead has this setup.

I bought a locking gas cap for $10. at Advanced Auto.....no problems.

Ok, since we AV owners are miniature gasoline tankers on wheels, I decided I needed a locking gas cap for it. Sooooo, I just took the one I had off my old S-10 pickup compared it to the original one on the AV and walla, identical match, so now I've recycled my old locking gas cap and put it on the AV, three clicks and it works great, no check engine light or nothing. Then I found the original cap for the S-10 and put it back on. The locking gas cap is a Stantz from Advance Auto Parts, it was 8 years old and still working.

I have the factory locking gas cap - it is hidden behind the Billet fuel door ;) as far as after market caps other than a gm locking cap (why) what would be the purpose? :cautious: Stick with a factory one - now if you can afford a locking billet cover (y) >:D then go for it.

I ordered a locking gas cap through Van Devere. GM part no. 12497880

The directions are:

Lock: Insert cap without key and tighten by rotating cap clockwise until cap clicks three times.

Unlock: Insert key and rotate 1/4 turn counter clockwise, then remove cap by rotatiing it counter clockwise.

The problem that concerns me is that with the cap in my hand, just out of the box, if I insert the key, I can turn it clockwise, but not counter clockwise. I can turn it counter clockwise after I have turned it clockwise. I would hate to put this thing on and then not be able to unlock it. I could see myself being blown up, by the gas fumes, trying to drill the lock off.

Once you tighten the cap on, then does it lock and when you put your key in, then you can turn it to the left?

After reading this post last night, I called my local GM dealer and gave him the part number (12497880) and he had four in stock ($26.00). During lunchtime I drove over to the dealer and compared it to the factory cap. It was identical, minus the lock. I decided to purchase the cap, however the salesperson warned me... Do not toss your original cap (yeah right, like I would do that) because when you get your truck smogged the smog place might fail you because you do not have the factory cap on.

I don't foresee any problems, it's just something I thought I would pass on.

I'm like you, in that I really don't see any difference in the caps except the key/lock and it does have a GM number on the box. Have you put your cap on and unlocked it yet? My key turns only to the right when the cap it off. Will it turn to the left and unlock when I put the cap on? That's what concerns me. Let me know after you have tried it out. I may be too cautious, but if it would not unlock, I'm sure the GM service advisor would want to know why I put it on if I wasn't sure it would unlock.

Roy,

Since I took it out of the box to compare at the dealership, I also tested it (once) while I had it out. It locked like it's supposed to and opened just fine. I'll install it tonight when I get home.

Note - The advisor had no information regarding the gas caps compatibility with the AV.

Picked up a locking cap from the dealer today. So far, looks and works just fine.

Funny thing happened - the parts guy was chatting with one of the other guys there so I was waiting... I didn't mind, it's Friday and all... then he stops and says, "oh I'm sorry I didn't realize you were waiting". He gets the part and says, "I'm really sorry for making you wait" and takes 15% off, so I got the cap for $22. Makes me wish I was buying a Whipple or something expensive! :)

Ok, I admit. I'm a sucker for a gadget. This locking cap has a built-in combination lock, and you can stash your backup key as well.

Here's what the seller had to say:

"Hi Pete
MS-571 is correct for your 2002 Chevy Avalanche, it has a pressure valve to prevent the [check engine] light from coming on, [have] in stock, all orders are shipped priority mail [2=3 days], shipping [USA] and [tax] is included in the $29.00 ea."

For a peek go to: Gas Cap

I'll report back on how it works out.

Am I missing something? Didn't the General put a screen in the filler neck a long time ago so that gas could not be siphoned out? I remember trying to siphon gas from a GM car for my mower years ago and I couldn't get it to work and that is what I was told then.
