So here I am... About 20 minutes ago, tooling along I95 northbound in Fort Lauderdale at about 70 MPH. Just after the I595 ramp, what's in the road? Somebody's freaking fiberglass bed cover off of their pickup!!!

It was white and obviously had already been smacked a couple of times already... Nothing I could do but be steady eddie and hit it too.... No damage to the beast, but the tailgater behind me was surprised!!! I thougt for sure I'd get a flat at a minimum, but everrything looked OK upon inspection at the haciedna...

This is not the strangest thing I've seen in the road, but it pumped up the volume there for a couple of secs!!! What was the strangest? Funny you should ask....

A leg.... human... but that's another tale....

Ahh! Glad you came through that ok. I'm sure that wasn't anything short of terrifying.

I came inches away from hitting a 5' folding ladder on 595 one day. It was laying between the fast and middle lane. I was changing lanes. Was half way through my lane change when I saw it. Missed it by inches.

I imagine whoever hit that got very sad very quickly.

Some positive Karma coming your way too!

David

Thanks, David... I could use it! Have seen several ladders in the road lately... Strange phenomenom....

Up there in Jersey land, ya gotta watch for that snow flying off of the Semi trailors... that's always good for a few laughs! Back atchya with the karms.....

It has been awhile since I've seen anything major in the road. I saw a white bucket fall off a pickup truck the other day and it rolled off the road right away but that's been about it.

I just got back from Nebraska (drove) and got behind a few trucks that were parked when it snowed and then were dumping snow all the way down the road.

It was interesting having it snow when it was perfectly sunny out. :2:

:)

Oh yeah, and I visited parents and relatives and stuff while I was there too.

You ever see those Huge Pot holes here in north Jersey?
or NYC? They could eat up your whole truck and then some.. LOL
Hope every thing is OK under the truck.

A while back, I was just entering a divided highway we call the "Links" in Hamilton, Ontario. I had just merged into the driving lane, cars all around (front, back, and side). A pick-up in front of me had a load of lumber, and some ladders, etc.

That :8: pickup rolled over a grade in the road, and much to my amazement, a wooden horse (the type used by carpenters) came skidding out of the back of th pickup and into my lane. Well, that was probably no more the 60-80 yards in front of me, and I was at highway speed (60+ mph). The horse managed to skid along the highway, slowing gradually. With my brakes on, the horse and I missed by just a couple of yards.

Oh yeah, the driver of the pickup didn't even notice :6: :E:

Great Thread - 2 stories

Doing about 65-70 in the left lane on an interstate in Wisconsin, 4-5 car lengths from the car in front of me, suddenly, and at the last minute for him, he swerves to reveal a couch in the middle of the lane. Thank goodness for the shoulder and my youthful reflexes. Almost went back, the couch looked pretty good ;D

Second story, on the tollway here in Illinois, I was in the middle lane a car length back from a pick-up in the laft lane next to me. It was a workmens truck with all kinds of 'stuff' in the back. After hitting a bump, the stuff justled and out came a bucket of paint streaking through the air. I only noticed one car getting a fresh coat of road lane yellow. Several years later the spill still shows on the road.

Well it wasn't road debris but a few years ago when i was on Vacation in Az. on the way back from the GRAND CANYON early in the morning two lane road i see a large black lump in the middle of the road slowed up and right in front of me was a (get this) the largest BULL i have ever seen this bull was HUGE with a large set of HORNS, well he just layed there and looked at me after two or three min. a few more cars came up be hind me the fool be hind me starts to blow his horn and pull out to go around me till he saw what the hold up was after a few more min. the bull got up and walked away.
A short way down the road was a large SIGN that says " WATCH FOR CATTLE IN THE ROAD THIS IS OPEN RANGE LAND AND THE CATTLE HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY"

I have a GREAT bull story (no bull! ;D ) from way back when I was stationed in TX in the AF.... That's all for now, I'll relate it in Pete's Place at a future date soon!!!

Those are some LARGE animals.....

I saw a tractor tire (the big size) in the middle of the lane, on a 4lane highway, a dually was tailgating me, so when I saw the guy ahead of me swerve I had more then enough time to get into the other lane, but the dually didnt

I posted this when it happened - my Avalanche was attacked by a rake that somehow ended up in the HOV lane on I-5. There was no where I could go but into it. I had just put on my billet bowtie, which suffered the brunt of the impact. :6:

That was in 2003 - that was the year I should have just stayed asleep like Rip Van Winkle until 2004 and gone, "you said WHAT happened!"

Well - way back in the early '70's I was riding a motorcycle in the inside lane, the freeway curving slightly to the left. In the median was some dense brush..Out of it comes a medium sized pooch, right in front of me, as I'm doing 65-70! Just before a *&!%^$@(%^#, he decides to go back to the bushes and mark his territory.

Another one... Not a close call, but a weirdo if there ever was one.
Talk about not-so-intelligent drivers... One early Saturday morning a few years back, I thought I'd go to a local restraunt for some breakfast after raking up some leaves from a local windstorm.. When I exited the freeway with a bobtail truck and a few other cars, turned left under the freeway; I was behind the truck and wondered why he was slowing - no light and very light traffic. I started to go around him but had to wait for a (the idiot) in a Honda to beat me to it. Well, he stopped abruptly too, only he stood on his horn as well as his brakes.....For what? A TUMBLEWEED!!!!

I hit a pickup truck bedliner...

I was comming home from a bad day at work...almost 10PM.
I had an s10 blazer then...

The thing was on the Garden State Parkway on top of the Raritain bridge..in the left lane...

I went right over (into) the bedliner and hit the part that goes against the cab...went right through...no damage...but scared the crap out of me...

Told the guy at the toll booth...and he said ..." oh yeah ...we've had a few reports...someone will be out to pick it up..."

LOL... those bloody kangaroos!! There ain't no way to predict which way they will jump and they are high enough to finish up on top of the bonnet. Buggers!

Back in the 80's I was driving in the midwest (Indiana I think). We were on the interstate, traveling from NJ to Wisconsin, when one of those famous midwest storms came out of nowhere. The rain and wind were so bad we had to pull over for a few minutes. When the storm died down a bit, we started driving again. As I'm driving down the road, I see something big in the middle lane. As I slowed down, I was able to see that it was an entire chest of drawers sitting in the middle of the interstate, completely intact and upright. Almost like someone set up their bedroom on the interstate. I have no idea where it came from, whether it fell off a truck or was blown there like a scene out of the movie Twister!

I went over that bridge a few days ago. I think the bedliner was still there..... ;)

I've run over an 8' 4x4 with the tires on one side of the AV at 60 mph. I was very surprised at how well the suspension handled it.

I find that Honda's tend to cause bumpsteer, but Toyota's don't.
And, of course, I just don't notice running over Kia's. :p

Is that why the Aussie grill guards are so BIG? 'Roo repellers...

Actually another story where I sort of created road debris.

When I was in college I interned at PSNH in their P2 department as what would be called today a "project coordinator" - back then I would describe it as little more than being a secretary.

Anyway after a hellacious snow storm I hit the road in my little Ford EXP with my own little avalanche zone sitting on the room - it had to be at least 18 inches of very wet, very heavy snow. While driving on the highway the snow in one big chunk started to slowly slide backward down the roof onto the back glass. I didn't notice this until it got "dark" insde and my rearview mirror became obscured.

All at once this huge block of snow came off the back of my car. There was so much weight and change in aerodynamics my rear suspension "snapped" from the loss of the weight and the snow boulder exploded when it hit what I think was a Mercedes behind me. :)

Road Debris almost became part of that today.

While coming back from my doctor's with my wife in the AV. I'm in the car pool lane and a Nova with a blower is tooling along in the fast lane on my right. The carpool lane is seperated by a painted shoulder from the fast lane.
Now in semi medium traffic 65-70mph he's passed me and is half mile ahead. In front partially blocking the fast lane and painted shoulder was a 6 ft. step ladder lying sideways. Cars had slowed down and some had stop. The Nova locks up his brakes. Boy should had seen those tires smoke. I'm braking hard to the point where ABS would had kicked in. Mean time he skids right doing a sliding 180 for the right hand lane, then comes straight back across the freeway stopping halfway into the carpool lane. :3: I cleared his front bumper by a few feet. :p Beyond was a couple cars that had hit or run over the ladder and Freeway Road Side Service was parked on the rightside waiting for CHP to run a road block. That Nova was lucky he didn't hit anyone, what was he thinking. :E:

And I bet ya gotta be twice as careful on a motorcycle!!! And I thought a bedcover or a ladder was tough...
