I just traded in a Grand Am for my Avalanche and I have noticed that at night time there is no way to turn the headlights off. I live on an Air Force base and the guards want you to turn off your headlights when you come up to the gate.

My Grand Am (which is also GM) had the automatic lights, but you could downgrade to just running lights when needed. The avalanche's headlights stay on no matter what position the switch is in.

Is this normal? Or should I be taking this to the dealer? :cautious:

Normal operation...

Just mash your Dome Override button four times and off they'll go. It's right under the headlight dial.

Four mashes, headlights off, interior lights off, only lights on are the odometer and clock

You can also use the dome override button to turn off the daytime running lights.

Also note that you must mash the button four times within six seconds for this to work. (Reference: Page 2-55 of your AV bible - Credit: Goo)

Also also note that the color of your interior lights may vary.

Also also also note, continuing to mash the button will not change the color of your interior lights.

No there is nothing wrong with your vehicle. There is a dome overide and I believe that depressing three times will turn the headlights off. refer to the owners manual for exact directions.

Next weeks light lesson will be on using the four interior spotlights mounted on the roof. :)

I have also discovered tonight that if you have your parking brake on, your headlights will not automatically turn on... but you can still manually turn them on.
