Rust From Roof Rack Installation

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin

Refer to SHAFMANS post above your original one...he lists a summary of it.

EDMUNDS and other car sites have listings of them...heck search on here I remember a post that had a linky thingy to a site that would provide TSB for your vehicle of choice....

The rust you see is hopefully the metal shavings that can be removed without damage to your paint...It should be OK and last a long time with proper cleaning and protection....

HTH and Good Luck

Your Pic worked and it looks like all they did was blow the shavings and they stuck under the weatherstrip...It looks repairable

Again Good Luck

Wow LRNerd, Thats alot more than I had on mine.

Was everybody elses that bad too?

I was able to get rid of mine myself by just rubbing the area with some wax, it was nowhere near that much though.

Mine's is as bad on the other side and from the front to the back of the car. I'm hoping im my plea to GM that I have only had the car 2 weeks that we can work something out. I tried to clean mine up in a small area but the rust is down through the paint in some areas. I didn't want to break off the pieces because I'm taking it to the dealership on Thursday for them to look at it. The area I did clean didn't remove too much.

Well I posted a rust problem in Feb '05. The dealer told me it would be covered under the warenty. I have been calling them every week since March and they always told me the same thing. I spoke with the general and they called the dealer. The dealer would call me back and say they needed the O.K. from the east coast body manager. Low and behold tomorrow 6/14 my 2002 Av is going in to the shop. The rust is so bad they have to replace the entire roof panel. When they took the roof rack off every screw hole was rusted out. Some of the screws could not even be removed. I've been driving around with white epoxy sticking out of the holes since Feb.. I'll believe this repair when I see it with my own eyes.

Good luck..  I have an 03 with a factory RR. No signs yet.

I DO NOT HAVE THE ROOF RACK, But did check under my seal and what did I find, Not rust but dirt, Looks kinda like rust but it is dirt, I did notice also that the seal looks to have rubbed the clear coat some what, I will clean this area and apply a good wax to it.  The dirt looks like grime, infact. But no rust, Thank goodnes.

That's often an overlooked place all along that trim/guttering seal or whatever they call it. I often forget it. Then, oh crap! Yuk! And spend a few minutes more on the truck detailing.

I saw this, so I thought i'd check mine....I installed my own roof rack, thought I vacumed up all the shavings...wrong.  I had some small spots of rust near almost all the roof rack mounts.  I wiped it down, cleaned the rubber, then  used my clay bar to remove all the rust.  The clay bar did remove almost 100% of the rust, it was definately on the surface of the paint, but took about 1 hour of rubbing the calybar to completely remove it all.  Then waxed the channel.  Nowhere near what LRNerd posted.

I would suggest everyone, roof rack or not, check this area and give it a detail, as I noticed small scratches up and down in the paint, from debri and opening and closing of the door over time.
