Let me see if I can describe this w/out a photo...

On the inboard sides of the black brackets onto which the hard cargo panels mount there are some unpainted bits (kind of look like pins of some sort) that are rusting. Anyone else seen this? Are you doing anything about it, or just ignoring it?

Incidentally, what is the purpose of these little un-painted thingys aside from rusting and making my Av look bad? ???

Rich

EDIT: OK I took another look and YGMN is right it's part of the roller looking thing that's part of the locking mechanism...the pin that hold the rollers in place. The "rollers" aren't rusting yet, just the pins that are holding them...and they are rusting BADLY. Oh well.

Yeah I noticed that on my 02 when I had the everything out of the bed washing it out. The grab handle bolts on mine are rusting too. I will probably touch up the bed area when I do the handle bolts.

so you are thinking of just scratching off the rust (if one can get in there with something) and dabbing on a little black touch-up paint then?

I think the silver roller is a part of the locking dohickey for the panel's underside handle widget.........

probably cheap chrome plated from thje looks of mine....I keep the bed covers on as much as possible.....

I have found a great product used in the car restoration business for preventing parts from rusting and which also allows parts that are all ready rusted to be painted over and sealed permanently. It is great for bolts, frames, driveshafts, etc. It is called POR-15 and can be found at:

http://www.por15.com/

Hope this helps.

Wow... that looks like a great product.

Does it cover the rust or remove it?

Can you paint over it and how well does it cover?

Seems like this could be used a gazillion ways... especially in Oregon :cautious:

POR-15 does not remove rust. It forms a solid seal over top of it while at the same time forming an impenetrable shell and preventing further rust damage. I have used it on older vehicles to prevent further rusting on wheel wells, underbody parts, etc. As I mentioned earlier it also works great on drive shafts, frames, brake rotors, etc. to prevent rusting and provide a permanent paint job. I think it also comes in a few colors too.

Hope this helps.

I forgot to mention that it can be painted over. It is recommended where direct exposure to sunlight is possible. There may be different variations based on the type of application as well. This I am not sure on.

boyne_avy,

Thanks for the tip, I may have to give that product a try :)

re: thingys and dohickeys...that is one of the reasons I get such a kick out of reading ygmn's posts! :D
