Hey all,
So the other day I was dutifully changing my oil (yes with Mobil 1 oil and Mobil 1 oil filter) and installing the K&N FIPK when I look up the the underside of my hood at the latch and saw RUST! Not just a little either. This truck was barely 1.5 years old.

Does anyone else have rust in this area? If I could figure out my digital camera, I'd post a pic.

Bill

I got rust there too. I'm not worried though....it's a lease and I'm giving it back just in time for an '06 model!

Just take it in to your dealer.....they shouldn't have a problem fixing it.

where exactly is this?

on the hood catch?

or the little latch doohicky you move with fingers to open hood?

I mean the hood catch will rust eventually since the latch wears off the paint....and hence exposes the steel.....if worried I would clean....and paint and then cover with maybe electrical tape or something sacrificial to the latch scraping action...

I think he's talking about the catch attached to the hood. Mines rust colored, too, but it really doesn't look like rust. More like something in the paint ???

MINE TO, IT WAS THERE THE DAY I TOOK IT HOME.
TOOK IT TO THEIR BODY SHOP TO REPAIR AND THEY TOOK CARE OF IT BUT NOW ITS BACK.

my '02 had it as well. did not pay attention to the '04 yet. i would not woryy. i would clean off the latch and strike. pack the latch with some grease. put some on the strike as well. most will come off the strike i'm sure. the little bit that is left should help prevent some of the rust in the future.
i think the problem is the strike rubbing against the latch in the closed position causing the surface to oxidize. clean up the oxidation and protect it with something. when i had a billet grille installed the mounting screws rusted. it looked aweful. i removed the grille before the srews made it impossible. i cleaned them up with a wire brush. i used some black Rustoleum paint to cover them up. it looked good. had it mounted on the truck for about a month, or so. when i took it off before trade in the hardware still looked good. i sold it to a member with no complaints.

I have rust there as well . I am currently waiting for the dealer to call me back after he talks to the factory rep. He knows (as well as I) that repairing is only temporary as its in the pinch seam, and the only way to correct permanently is to replace the hood. The other option is to leave it and hope it rusts completely through before the 75\100k corrosion warranty expires. Of course it would look like :D: by the time that happens. I may get a fiberglass hood eventually.
