Well there is no more thinking about this GTG. It is going to happen!

When: June 16th 2007
Time: 11am - 2pm
Where : Pinnacles Picnic area - Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

The GTG will take place @ Virginia's Shenandoah National Park on Skyline drive as that will be close to where Sam and Jodi will be at that particular time.

The GTG will be at the Pinnacles Picnic area which is located at mile marker 36.7 on Skyline drive.? This picnic area is located only a few miles south of the Thornton Gap entrance of Shenandoah National Park. I have been there before and its a great place for pinicing, hiking or just enjoying the view. There is a nice lodge and campsite available for anyone that is interested located in the Big Meadows recreation area if anyone is interested in staying at the park overnight.

>Here< is a link to the Shenandoah National Park website. Lots of things to do in and around Shenandoah National Park. I know that I would be bringing some of my kites to fly in Big Meadows. For those of you that have not been there - the view is spectacular with many scenic overlooks.

Let me know who is interested - the more the merrier.

Those of you that have never been to Shenandoah National Park. The drive through the park is unequaled as far as I am concerned. You will enjoy some of the most breathtaking, spectacular mountain top views of the Shenandoah Valley. There are scenic overlooks every few miles along the entire length of the drive along Skyline drive. Skyline drive literally transverses the top of the Blue Ridge Mountain range with scenic views both to the east and west. There are also many hiking trails if you would like to go for a nice hike and many more outdoor activities are also available such as horseback riding and such.

Communications: I will compile a cell phone # list of all of the attendeee. If you are planning on attending, PM me your "real" name and cell phone # and I will add you to the list. I will send out the list a few days before the actual event. I didn't actually check to see if my cell phone worked at the actual picnic area, but cell phone reception is very sporatic. My cell phone did work just a couple of miles down the road. I will also have my FRS radios with my and will be on channel 4 once your are in the local area. If for some reason, you cannot send or receive PM's you can email me your names and cell phone to: bheasley@shentel.net

Cool. :D  I have started a list of attendees in the original post.

Count me as a maybe.

June 16th is too far off to make sure nothing is happening then.  I have to go with family to Lake Anna sometime in June, just don't remember exactly when.

I am so looking forward to this, We just want to meet other members.

Sam

Just want to know where we will meet up and at what time?

Sam

I am thinking that we could meet at one of the picnic areas @ Big Meadows recreation area and do a picnic lunch of some sort. We all could bring something for the picnic I am thinking that we could meet some time around 10-11am so it's not too early for those that are coming from out of state. Some members from Maryland and West Virginia have expressed some interest in attending.

I am planning on heading up to Big Meadows recreation area this coming weekend to check things out. I will give everyone some more details after my visit this coming weekend. I will check out the picnic area and see about reserving one for the GTG.

More information to follow......

I talked to my Mom yesterday, She knows where this is at and She along with some other family members will be there too.

Added you to the list John.

Well I made a trip up to Shenandoah National Park yesterday. I have now changed the location of the GTG to a picnic area that is much nicer than the one at Big Meadows that I had originally posted as the possible location for a picnic.

After going up and checking out the picnic area at Big Meadows, it is not a real great picnic area. The picnic area located at Pinnacles is a much nicer area and would be better suited to a larger group for a GTG. There is a shelter located there which is pretty nice. I don't know yet whether or not the shelter can be reserved, I am waiting for a call back from one of the park rangers to verify if the shelter can be reserved. If the shelter is not available for reserving, I will just get up there early on the morning of the 16th and claim the shelter for us.

The views at this picnic area are very good, where as there is virtually no mountain top view from the picnic area at Big Meadows.

Sounds great. Can't wait and just want to say thanks for putting this together.

Jodi and I would like to know what to bring, ie. chips, dips, dogs, buns, hamburger? What ever you think.

Sam

We are planning on bringing the hamburger patties and some chicken breasts for BBQing as well as some charcoal and lighter fluid.

Here are some other things that will be needed (volunteers)

Buns for burgers and chicken breast and fixin's
paper plates, napkins, plastic utensils, table clothes for the picnic tables
chips, dips, salsa
side dishes
drinks (sodas)

If anyone is plannig on bringing their kids, they could also bring some hot dogs and buns.

Also if someone has a small portable BBQ grill they could bring in case we cannot get into and area that already has a grill already. Most of the areas have grills.

If you are planning on drinking any alcoholic beverages - BYOB? :p

We will bring these items:

chips, dips, salsa
side dishes
drinks (sodas) 2 cases of mixed soda
