My wife and I went down to our local Chevy dealer to check out the 2002 AV. ?We are looking for a Black 2x2 model. Anyway, they only have two in the lot, a white HD 4x4 and a 1500 4x4. The 1500 is in Vic Red but with dealer painted side claddings and top covers (talk about a BIG RED truck).

Guess how much the dealer put down on the sticker?
No, not $3000, not $4000, not %5000 but as $7000!!!! ?   :( :(

Come on, talk about a dealer markup!

My wife and I look at each others and turn around and left the dealership without saying a word.

I wonder if any of you out there got it done and how much? I bet it is not $7K!

That is nuts. When I bought mine they had the painted cladding on the upgrade price sticker. They had it listed at $2900.

Sounds like the dealership that you went to is trying to put the screws to whoever buys a vehicle from them.

My only question is did they paint more then just the cladding. If they also painted the bed covers then I could see the extra price increase but even then that is nuts.

I also talked to the dealership on how much it would cost to have it done after the fact they told me 2500 - 3000. If you are in the Texas area I can give you a line on a dealership to talk to.

Yes, they pained the whole thing Vic Red. Claddings, the three pieces bed cover, the midgate/taillight area. It a "BIG RED TRUCK". And the funny thing is my wife thing it is great.
Hmmm, the price of paint must be expensive in NY than Texas. ;)

I am in NY/NJ area but I like what you did to you white AV.

Maybe I should Convinced my parents to get an AV they are in Houston area.

I have a feeling that unfortunately the dealerships are starting to catch on to all the folks who have thoughts of painting there cladding, so what do they do...they beat you too it...and then mark the price up ridiculously....

Anything to try to make an extra buck or so... :6:

Badkarma that's nothing. I took a look at an Av today, Z-71 with cloth, lifted, flowmaster, nice chrome rims with BFG's and smittybuilt steps. $46,000. Crazy. It's been siting there for about 5 months. But I'm sure someone will buy it. Right next to it was a loaded 02 Monte SS with ground effects, 36,000. Without the effects I only paid a little over 22,000 loaded, for my wifes.
They'll jack up the price, put a special name on it and pocket the dough. Just like the Dale Earnhardt Silverado. :7: :8: :7: :8:

tfreimiller, Did the dealer leave the textured surface on the cladding or did he sand it smooth?
I can't find anyone willing to paint it. All the places I've gone say it can't be done and the paint won't stick. I argued with a lady for a long time about why it couldn't work. She just kept giving me the same stupid answer. "It's meant to be plastic to avoid getting chipped.." Why are people so ignorant?

I don't know about tfreimiller's AV but the one I saw in the dealer has smooth side cladings.

Same here. The 2 my dealer had that were all tricked out had color-matched cladding that was smooth and not textured. I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to paint it for you. There's probably not a whole lot of difference between this cladding and the stuff that all the Pontiacs are weighed down by. Just that there's is already smooth. Either case, it is still plastic. Heck, look at Saturn's -- lots of plastic!

Do you guys think it would be smart to buy an extra set of the cladding just to have in case GM stops making them 10 years down the road?

Powersurg: I love :love:my AV just like the next member, but 10 years from now, I think I'll probably be looking for a new truck or car or space ship! :0: Maybe I'll give my AV to one of my kids. The youngest one will just be getting his permit to drive in 10 years. :p Besides, if you do keep it for 10 years and you need new cladding I'm sure Dal Slabaugh will still be able to help you out!!!! ;)

Truckman :B:

While we're talking about it I would like to know how much a complete set would cost? Does anyone have any connections that would know. If the '03 darker grey plastic looks good maybe I could swap it. The 4X4 shop that put my lift on did a crappy job cutting out the tow hook holes and I was atleast thinking about getting a new bumper cover.

If you ever priced automotive paint you will find out that the color RED is the most expensive. (conversely BLACK is the cheapest) However, I think the dealer is about 2-3K out of line. I usually buy a red vehicle, but on the Av it didn't do anything for me. But if you want more bang for you buck...BUY RED :3:

Ok, so lamination may be a poor choice of words. In effect they heat shrink-wrap the individual pieces in whatever color or pattern you want. The dealer had his black AV'scladding covered in a carbon fiber look. It looked very very good. Fit and finish were excellent. I couldn't find any seams. Unfortunately I forgot my camera. Cost for this is supposedly $3000-4000. I got a brochure, but there's no web site on it. The factory that applies it is here locally so it may be something new and unique. I'll try to scan the brochure and post the pics.

I found this product called Vinylkote on the web. Has anyone used it? It claims to be a dye and not a paint, so it's not supposed to chip or crack. I was thinking of ordering it to match my victory red paint. It says it keeps the original texture. Not sure how that would look. http://www.parasolinc.com

This looks like it might be a solution, at least for those of us that want a dark [black] cladding. (y)

Now, how to test.

Vynlkote could be perfect. So who is going to look into it? I'm right in the middle of restoring my house so money isn't too much of a commodity right now. Gandolph, do you want to give it a try? A don't know if a black would be the best color for your black truck considering that the two colors might not match exactly. What about a dark gray that I could use with my blue?

Friend of mine owns a paint & body shop in Northern VA. He does amazing work, and specialized in restorations & Corvettes.

Anyways, I asked him about painting the cladding and he'll do it for 1000. But, this is without sanding it smooth. He doesn't know how long or hard it would be to sand it out, so he doesn't want to quote a price, which is understandable.

Anyone who's interested, send me a PM.

I would think given the option, the cladding would come out best if sanded down to a smooth finish first then painted...this may also avoid some issues with the paint in the future.... :B:

Yeah, it would take so experimentation, I would want to get a door panel to test. Of course, I could do the cladding black and repaint the rest yellow to be different. If I took the black as a wide stripe up by the sail, it would look a lot like the Plymouth Roadrunner that I owned. >:D

Yeah, got rid of it to a couple of students who drooled over it constantly. It was not too shabby, but that yellow tok getting used to, made a nice streak on the county roads.

What I would really like back is my '67 GTO ;D

The first car I ever took a test drive in was a 67 GTO convertible, with a slapstick automatic.. It was on a used lot in 1974 and I was 18. I will always remember driving that car. It was awesome,

They didn't have speed limiters back then, just county mounties, and they didn't care that much - sigh!
