Seat Removal

Has anyone removed the front bench seat on a 2003? I just want to know if there's anything in particular I should watch out for before I start tearing things apart..

Do y'all think disconnecting the battery is enough protection from maybe accidentally setting off the side-impact air bags??

Thanks!

If your worried about the air bags...pull the fuse and don't forget to put it back when your done.

I'm thinking about a mod which may (or may not) require removing the front bucket seats. Chevy4x4 (Jon, is it?), thanks for the page about your console/carpet install. I have read it before and remember you from my early days at hanging around GMTC. BTW, some of your pictures on that page do not exist anymore or are mislinked for some reason.

Anyway, the original post was about removing the seats in a 2003. Mine is a 2002, and I want to make sure I don't set off any airbags. I've got the side ones in the seats. I won't be necessarily completely removing the seats, just lifting them up temporarily to work under there, so I don't think I will need to disconnect any of the many electronics (I have power, heated buckets) that sit under the seats--I know it's a zoo down there.

So if someone could advise of any preparatory steps (disconnect battery, disconnect fuse X, etc.) to take before taking stuff apart, I'd appreciate it. Also, it would be nice to know what stuff is gonna need resetting (like my factory radio), if the battery is disconnected for that long.

Thanks in advance,
Brendan

I've got some info on my site about how to do it: http://www.chevy4x4trucks.com/silverado/install/consolecarpet.html

It's easy, just be careful to not strip the heads of the bolts. You'll just need some deep metric sockets. The center part of the 40/20/40 bench is held on by the two innermost bolts of the other seats so you've got to remove eight bolts in all.
I'm curious about what kind of sockets you used to remove the seat bolts. On my '02, the bolts that hold the seats down to the floorboard are some kind of Torx-head-lookin' thing. Did you just use a regular socket that fit the points of the head of the bolt? Where can I find the proper socket for these bolts?

As for the side airbags, I guess I'll just disconnect the battery, check the fusebox for something marked airbags, and try to be careful unless someone has a better suggestion (i.e. documentation).

Thanks,
Brendan

I am interested in this as well for my '03 w/ heated/power bucket seats. Would like to remove seats temporarily. I would like to know how many bolts, what size, torque specs, do you have to remove any part of center console, and is the wiring just plug and play, airbags, I plan to disconnect the battery-is that enough for a safe removal.

Thoughts?

Removal Procedure

Disabling Procedure

Important
Refer to SIR Service Precautions before disabling the SIR system.

Turn the steering wheel until the vehicle's wheels are pointing straight ahead.
Turn OFF the ignition.
Remove the key from the ignition.

Important

Remove the SIR fuse from the fuse block.

Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) (1) from the steering wheel module yellow 4-way connector (2) located left of the steering column near the knee bolster.
Disconnect the steering wheel module yellow 4-way connector (2).

Remove the CPA from the I/P module yellow 4-way connector (1) located behind the I/P support.
Disconnect the I/P module yellow 4-way connector (1).

Remove the CPA from the RF side impact module yellow 2-way connector (1) located under the passenger seat.
Disconnect the RF side impact module yellow 2-way connector (1).
Remove the CPA from the LF side impact module yellow 2-way connector (1) located under the driver seat.
Disconnect the LF side impact module yellow 2-way connector (1).

Enabling Procedure

Remove the key from the ignition.

Connect the steering wheel module yellow 4-way connector (2) located left of the steering column near the knee bolster.
Install the CPA (1) to the steering wheel module yellow 4-way connector (2).
