I noticed a while back that there's a small hole or sensor on the back (front?) of the rear-view mirror. You can see this from the front of the truck while looking at the mirror through the windshield. What is this?

That sensor is for your auto dimming mirror.
So if someone is behind you at night, it's like in the old days when you would flip your mirror so you wouldn't get blinded.

If that were the case, it seems that the sensor would have to be facing behind me, yes?

I am thinking that it has to do with the auto dimming, maybe to figure when it is dark outside, so it doesn't dim during the day, will play with it next time the car is out.

Michael,

You are correct. It is for the auto dimming.

Yup. I tried the age-old "Stick-finger-over-hole,-shine-flashlight-into-photocell-thingy,-wait-for-mirror-to-dim,-remove-finger" trick. The mirror brightens back up again.
