Anyone have answers to the "service 4 wheel drive" warning? Avalanche not yet 4 months old, just turned 7600 km. (Canadian vehicle) Was in 2 WD when warning showed up. Restart did not fix problem.

Big thread on this issue in this section

HTH

Ps WELCOME to the club......check the canada section under meets and cruise to find local members.....

Restart two more times. Then head down to your favorite service department and start the documentation process. Better yet, skip the restarts and go straight there so you can show them b/c it may not have stored a code and they may not believe you. Good luck.

My '03 did the same thing at 7k mi. No 4WD lights or 4WD for that matter. Brought to dealer and after 2hrs all they did was reprogram a computer in the truck. Problem has not occurred again.

don't you just love it when a 5 minute reprogram takes 2 hours :E:

I hope it fixed it for you.

Purchased my 02 Avalance two weeks ago. The "Service 4WD" light is the only problem (not a big problem too me) stays on. The problems disappears when the wife drives my truck. Thinking of driving the truck to the local GMC dealer to have the problem fixed. I have read many post about the problem. Has Chevrolet issued a recall on this?

I dread having to do without my truck. I have waited 12 years to buy a new truck, my beloved Avalanche, and I hate to leave it somewhere.

If anybody needs me I will be in the driveway trying to find a reason burn some gas.

Just had my '03 in for this 2 weeks ago. They replaced the TCCM. (Transfer Case Control Module) I think that's what it stood for. No problems since.

Here's part of a GM document.

Condition

Some customers may comment that the 4WD/AWD indicator lights on the selector switch do not work, or the 4WD/AWD system may be inoperative and/or the service 4WD light is illuminated. The condition is typically intermittent and always occurs at key-up.

Cause

The Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) has not received the wake-up call during key-up and has remained in the "sleep mode".

When the TCCM is in the "sleep mode", it will not communicate with the class II bus or the Tech 2?.

Correction

1. Try to communicate with the TCCM. If no communication, go to step 2. If communication is possible, go to step 5.
2. Remove the underhood (ATCM or TREC) TCCM fuse.
3. Wait 30 seconds.
4. Reinstall the fuse. The module should "wake up" and communicate with the Tech 2?.
5. Check for codes in the TCCM. If a C0550 is found current or in history with or without other codes, replace the module and go to step 6.
6. Reprogram the TCCM using normal SPS procedures, using TIS software version 3 released March 8th, 2004 or newer.
7. Verify operation and that no codes are present.

Important

For the 2002 Model Year, the TCCM must be replaced and recalibrated.

ON MY 03 HAD PROBLEM OF SERVICE LIGHT CONDITION AND NO AUOT 4 WHEEL DRIVE, ONE SHOP HAD IT FOR A WEEK AND  FI. TOOK IT TO ANOTHER DEALER, TOP ONE IN TOWN. AFTER $6400 WORTH OF CHECKING WIRING AND TRYING TO REPRORAM TCCM AND THEY ACTUAL CALLED THE ENGINEERS AT GM TO GET THEIR INPUT. THE PROBLEM WAS SOLVED WHEN THEY CUT OUT MY AUTO START INTERFACE MODULE.
I WAS TOLD THAT BECAUSE OF THE COMPLEXITY AND USE OF WIRES(MULTIPLE USES FOR 1 WIRE) THAT IF ANY AFTER MARKET SYSTEM OR ACCESSORIES ARE PUT ON AND NOT HOOKED UP RIGHT, THAT EVERYTHING WILL WORK FOR A WHILE BUT AN ORIGINAL SYSTEM WILL FAIL DUE TO VOLTAGE ROBBERY. A LESSON WELL LEARNED--MAKE DOUBLE SURE YOU OR WHOEVER IS WORKING ON YOUR TRUCK AND INSTALLING SOMETHING THAT THEY DON'T TAP INTO SOME WIRE THAT IS NOT MEANT FOR ANYTHING BUT THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT

I have been reading about this issue to find out what the heck is going on with my black beauty (04 Avalanche 2500 222,580 miles)
I will be in 2 wheel drive and I get a message to service 4 wheel drive light on 2H is lit seems fine.
Well the other day I was in 2 wheel drive parked ran into a store came out fired it up and she was in 4-Lo so I stopped turned off the ignition turned it back on and pushed the 2 wheel drive button it starts flashing I hear & feel a weird clunk under me and off we go back in 2 wheel drive.
Any Suggestion???:help:

2005 Avalanche, 100k miles, from Mexico.  So I live in Michigan and 4 wheel drive is kind of a nice thing to have.  I engaged it for the first time yesterday since I bought it a couple months ago. It worked fine at the time.  I got home and the Service 4wd came up on the dash display.  I have read some threads about water effecting it and so that's what I'm hoping for, any advice would be great.  Also, my dash cluster is going haywire.  The rpm gauge is off 5k rpms, the speedometer gets stuck around 70mph, and my fuel gauge is off its rocker.  Any ideas?  I bought a programmer for it and I'm running in in the Economy mode, so the cluster isn't necessary.....I would just like it fixed.  Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.
