Service Airbag message on DIC and Airbag Light - Driving me nuts

Ok, so I recently purchased an '03 1500 Z71 Avy with the 5.3. When I bought it, the Service Airbag message on the Driver Information Center and the red airbag warning light on the dash were on. At the time I thought it was no big deal and that I could used my code reader to see what was going on after I got the truck home. Lo and behold, here I am going nuts over this. I haven't taken the airbag pod off the steering wheel yet (though I'm going to have to because the ignition switch needs to be replaced do to having to get the key in just the right spot to turn).

I'm thinking that somewhere along the line in it's 19 year-old existence that the airbags were removed by some unscrupulous types. I've been researching trying to find a remedy for turning off the Service Airbag warning message on the DIC as well as the red airbag warning light on the dash but I can't find anything on this. Is there anyway to turn these off? My code reader has airbag reading capability and spit out all kinds of "B" codes but it won't erase anything.

Has anyone else come across this? I definitely don't want to lay out $$$$ for a new airbag system.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for the help!

First thing I would do is use a scanner capable of reading SRS error codes.

Not all can.

I have a couple that can't and a couple that can.

I had two different GM vehicles that had air bag errors pop up.

One was a set of factory recalled wiring connectors under each front set and my Avalanche was a wire broken inside the wiring cover about an inch away from a connector under the passenger seat.

That last one was a bear to locate, but ended up being easy to fix.

None of these issues would I have been able to find without a capable scanner.

The codes I retrieved lead me in the right direction to find the faults and make the repairs.

Using the word search function I found 3 pages of older posts dealing with service airbag system, hope this link helps:

Vaeagleav - Cool thank you for the link; hopefully I'll find some relevant information.

EXT4ME - Per my OP I do have a code reader that reads airbag/SRS/ABS codes - it spit out a bunch of B00... codes relating to the passenger and driver side airbag circuits. Upon further research, I read that it could possibly be from bad connections under the seat. Upon looking under the seats, there's a yellow connector under each one that's not connected to anything nor is there an open wiring harness which I'm assuming would be for the airbags. This is why I'm thinking somewhere in the truck's history that someone removed the airbags. I'm just wanting to get rid of the Service Airbag message on the DIC...

Yup, yellow connectors are for the SRS system.

Could it be possible someone down the line replaced the seats?
