Shifting Clunk From First To Second

GUEST
hello! i have a 2002 avalanche and under hard acceleration it clunks and makes a strange noise when it shifts from first to second. it only does it when you accelerate at full throttel all the way through first and into second. it has been to the dealership twice now and i cannot figure out what it is. PLEASE HELP!!!

I know from my experiences that my Z71 shifted really smooth and even on the soft side. Does it do it also in Tow Haul Mode?

I have a 2002 Z71 with 12000 miles on it and it does the same thing exept it only does it when you take off easy like in a parking lot.It does not do it every time.I have had for about a year and it has done it maybe 20 times.Does your truck do it every time?

Yep it does it every time that I accelerate fully through first into second and I know that it is not the trans. because they just completely rebuilt it. I am afraid that it is something in the motor. People had suggested that maybe there was something stuck under or around the motor but the service techs and I have searched high and low but we cannot find out what is causing these noises. ONCE AGAIN PLEASE HELP!

AVALANCHE8 - I have the same thing. It only seems to do it when I start the truck, then drive off slowly. I thought it was like the AC clutch or something. Doesn't seem to do it again after that.

I had a Chevy Silverado 02 that did the same thing. It made a noise when taking off from a start. The fix turned out to be lubing the driveshaft splines with special lubricant from GM. part # 12345879 This is not a fix but it did stop the problem for about 10,000 miles then it has to be done again.

My last truck ('97 Silverado Stepside) had the exact same issue / temporary fix.
My 02 AV has a 'rough shift' from 1-2 after long highway driving during slow acceleration. It isn't easy to reproduce the problem.

i was 3 loose spark plug wires that had come off and they were arking all over the place

I have the same problem on a rolling shift from 1-2. Check the torque converter.

My 02 AV did the same thing. The dealer couldn't find the trouble so I had the Service Manager drive the truck home and back the next day. He felt it and had the mechanics replace the valve body. The problem disappeared.

Now my 03 AV is doing the same thing. Especially around 20 MPH in traffic under acceleration (after letting up on the throttle).

Back to the dealer...

I have a '03 and i have the same hard shift at regular speeds (1000 miles) .. I'm scheduling for a dealer trip soon.... seems this is a common problem ..?

My 02 has been doing it for about 20,000 miles now. It really does on every 1-2 shift after a run on the interstate. I am to pick up my 03 sometime this week. I was hoping this was not gonna be a problem again.

??? I had been driving "gingerlery" since I noticed the hard clunk ... tonight I decided I needed to hear more than feel my truck.. So i goosed it up and took off like a perverbialy bat out of hell and the shift clunk wasn't there... I slowed for the next stop light and after a nice easy take off from 1-2 - *CLUNK* there it was again.

I have to be out of town for a couple of days and wasn't able to get it in the shop .. hope to have this problem in and corrected ... if anyone else has any information at the fix share it with me/us.

thanks

Hey, I get the same thing from a rolling shift to 2nd gear :cautious: It is sporadic and not everyday. Then sometimes a couple of times in one day. I said something to my dealer and he wanted me to drive it for a couple of thousand miles and see it improved. I don't like it but I will post again and let you know if it goes away. Is this something I should be concerned about???

Well, from what I've seen with mine, it definitely won't go away (I wish :). Mine's been doing it since last summer. Took it in once, they couldn't reproduce it. I gave up during the winter as cold weather seemed to prevent it from happening much. Just took it in again this week as the warm has been bringing it back. Again, they couldn't reproduce it, but they tried lubing the driveshaft splines as someone else mentioned in hopes that it would take care of it.

Unfortunately (or fortunately since it would be an every 6 mo or so fix), it did it to me again on the way home from the dealer (actually got one of my really nasty 'shudders' - basically 3 or 4 'thunks' as it seems to try deciding if it wants 1st or 2nd gear). Guess I'll be going back again next week (the rolling shift is a detail I never noted until reading this, but it does seem to apply to mine, so maybe that will help them replicate it).

I am glad I am not the only one. I have an '01 with about 13k on it. I get that clunck going from a dead stop through the 1st and 2cd gears. At first I was afraid it may have something to do with the aftermarket exhaust some how affecting the transmission. But I am going to print this out and take it to the dealer and dare them to tell it is nothing. I smell a recall :p

I get this too, and if there is anyone out there that can search the TSB's, and find this, THAT would be something to take to the dealer....

Meanwhile, just stomp on it whenever you take off from anywhere..... ;D

Had same problem... Just got it back...

ITS FIXED!!

They replaced the solenoids and some "pin" was worn. Ask them to look in that "area".

1-2 hesitation is absolutely gone, and other shift are even smoother.

Hope this helps,

Rob

My 03 Ave has been to dealer 3 times, they have replaced drive shaft and install a dampened one? a module in trans but the thing still clunks and whines when you coast on the freeway, like too much play in the ring gear. They say the run-out is within specs. Iam totally frustrated with my truck and the dealer. maybe I will mention this valve body you had installed

Thanks,
:6:Jinks

I have an 07 and I have the same problem....took it to the dealer and they said it was normal shifting characteristic, I then gave him my "thats BS" glare and left.  I need to carry mine to another dealer. :E:

I'm in the same boat with my 06 Z71. I drive the highway every day...come off the exit ramp....stop at light.......accelerate...and clunk clunk clunk. I have 56000k miles....if its trans, isn't covered under powertrain warranty....I think it was 5 yrs/60k miles...getting close! Bringing it to dealer this week....I hope they don't jerk me around

I do have good news on this issue. I just had my tranny serviced for the 4Th time since I bought mine. The fluid and tranny internals are in great shape. the clunk is annoying, but from what I can tell not a problem. Mine has been doing it since I bought it in 04 with 40k. I now have 162k and still running awesome. Maybe someday, when my tranny needs it, I will get it rebuilt. But this is a problem that I can find no mechanical failure with. So I am going to let it ride for now.

Oh and the dealer was so fracking useless. It is the same dealer that told me the emergency brake is not made to be used regularly. It is to weak and breaks, so he said don't use it. So I removed it.
