Shimmy / Shake in 2008 Steering over bumps

A few months back I was driving my wifes Avalanche and noticed a strange feeling in the steering wheel.

It is an '08 LT 4x4 with the 20" factory wheels and bridgstone tires.

The truck has about 15,000 miles on it, no issues, no offroad use, hardly any dirt road driving either.

The steering wheel gives a shake, shimmy, or shudder when driving over a mild bump, or expansion joint at almost any speed.

It rides very smoothly at all speeds on smooth roads, doesn't shake while breaking etc.

Steering is straight and true.

She dropped it off at the dealership this morning.

They called and told her there is nothing wrong with the truck, but they recommend an allignment, rotate and balance the tires.

I called them back to explain that I didn't think it was an aligment issue.

After some discussion I told the service guy that I would like him to actually drive it and I would come down to go on the test drive with him.

After he drove it, he agreed that it didn't feel right.

They put it back up on the lift, did some kind of suspension test to check the struts and called me back to tell me that they wouldn't do anything further unless I pay $115 for front alignment, tire rotation, and tire balance.

Is there a known issue with this?

Does it sound like a problem that would be caused by an aligment?  Especially considering the truck drives straight, and smooth on smooth roads?

We also had a 2007 4x4 LT with the 17" wheels.  After 2 years and 36000 miles, and plent of off roading on the farm we used to live on, that truck didn't feel like a crappy old truck from the 70s.

that is a responsive suspension.  i bet you can feel every bump in the road.  did the alignment need any adjustment?  i always stand in the garage and watch them check it if i take her in after off road driving

They didn't have time to get it aligned when I called back, so I haven't done it yet.

Do you think it should feel like this?

It doesn't feel responsive to me, it feels sloppy over bumps.  It is strange because it feels fine on smooth road, responsive, straight etc.

My Corvette has a responsive suspension, but it doesn't feel like you are going to lose control of the steering over bumps.

I have a similar problem but the symptoms are not as bad as your sound.  What mind does is whenever I turn the steering all the way in one direction like in a tight turn, the front end shimmys / shakes like a tie rod end or ball joint is bad.  I also took it to the dealer and they could not find anything wrong.  I finally took a look at the problem myself and found that I have some play in the power steering gear box.  Just enough play that it slips when in a tight turn.  I even feel a small bump in the steering column when I hit a bump while turning into a driveway.
I'm not sure if this will help you but it may be worth the time to check.  Check the power steering gear box and or Idler arm for excessive play.
Good Luck!

I have a '09 LT 2wd with 80k that we bought new. I have noticed a slight steering wheel shimmy when hitting small to medium bumps at highway speeds. I recently replaced the sway bar links and bushings and it didn't change the way it feels. Everything else in the front end and steering seem tight with no noises. It has never had an alignment, would an out of alignment front end cause this? Tire wear is normal and it doesn't pull to one side. Struts? I'm at a loss on this one.
