Shorty Header Alternative?

I've had these on back order for over a month now... I called today, and they said it would probably be another 2 weeks because Edelbrock has a big backlog.

What I'm trying to decide is if there is something for around the same price and performance. ?I really want chromed, too.

I'm paying $247 shipped for the shorties from PaceParts.com

I thought about tubular headers, but I can't find a set of chromed ones for the AV. ?Also, I wanted something that would bolt right in.

I just installed my Gibson Dual Extreme exhaust last night, so it would have to be something that would work well with that.

Any suggestions? ?If I'm going to change, I have to decide quick so I can cancel my old order....

Doesn't Gibson have chrome shorties?

The ceramic coated TOGs look nice. It's not chrome but they keep their good looks.

I have a lot of respect for JBA products ...

Their dyno chart showed some impressive results for helping increase power down lower on the RPM range on a 5.3 .... Here's the chart .... (But again with these type of charts, I take them with a grain of salt... Although their baseline numbers look pretty accurate from the 5.3 pulls I've seen... ) Have at it...

Well, they came through... It should be here Tuesday. I'm kinda glad, because everything was quite a bit more.

Redshift:
I saw the Gibsons, but they were almost twice the price. Plus, I could never get a clear answer as to whether they had a port for the EGR or not. On the Gibson website's application page, it says it doesn't. I found that kinda funny...

11H:

Same thing with the JBA's. If you go on their products page, they only have it with "no EGR". About how much are the JBAs?

The JBA'a have a list price between $650-$850 depending on whether they are standard m/s, stainless, or are ceramic coated.

Just to comment on the JBA dyno chart:

It 'does' look rigged to me... :cautious: It looks like in thier stock run, they applied light throttle til the engine got up to about 2750, where they fed on the full power...

With the JBA run, they did the same, but fed the power on earlier, right around 2333...

Either way, there's still higher peak numbers, but this kind of fudging makes me wonder about them too.

I'd expect to see the dyno run start from a lower rpm, especially with a truck which needs that lowend power. ?Even my bike, which peaks at 10,750rpm, starts it's pull around 1200-1500rpm by the local operators. ? Both of these pulls done with the truck are above our stall speed, so these numbers only come into play once the truck's in motion. ?

Were they hiding something?

EDIT: They also shut down a little early.... just before 4,000rpm.

Hmm.

EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation. It's usually a 3 port solenoid (small, medium, and large ports) valve that connects the exhaust manifold to the intake or throttle body.

When the PCM shows a high combustion temperature, it signals the EGR to open the appropriate port and "recirculate" some exhaust gas back into the intake to lower the combustion temp.

The reason for this is nitrogen oxides (NOx) are formed at high temperatures. By lowering the combustion temp, you reduce the amount of NOx released into the atmosphere.

A.I.R. stands for Air Injection Reactor. It's basically a system that pumps more air into the exhaust manifold to complete the burning of exhaust gases. It helps convert carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide before it even hits the catalytic converter. It also reduces the amount of hydrocarbons (fuel) in the exhaust.

EGR + AIR = power robbers

Heheh, actually, they're not nearly as bad as they used to be. You'll find EGR in most vehicles and A.I.R. usually only in California vehicles. My AV doesn't have an EGR or AIR, thankfully.

Feel free to correct me if I'm off....

Im no gear head. so How do you tell if the Truck has E.G.R ?or A.I.R, and what does it mean.

I was told by Gibson tech service that any AV produced after 5/1/02 was non-EGR. Those before that date were EGR engines. Just trivia for those in need
