(y)I had my tires siped last weekend and what a difference it makes in the AV. Road noise from the tires just disapeared! The first on ramp I got on, the truck sat up straight and totally lost the tipping feeling it had before. Running over Botts dots [that's the round white reflectors between lanes] is hardly noticable and imperfections in the road don't make a sound when you hit them. I paid $15 per tire because of the large size of them, but what a difference.
All I can hear now is the growl of the ravin' muffler [louder than I like, not sure I can recommend it :-[] and a little wind noise from the mirrors. Best $60 spent so far. I'll put in the urehane bushings this weekend, and then it should be even better.
Here's the site to check out siping.

I have BF Goodrich's on my Z66 and they look like they have already been siped from the factroy. There are lots of little slits in the treads and they are fairly quiet on the road. I live in central Indiana and I don't know if anyone around here sipes tires or not. We have had a lot of snow this season and I hear that siping really helps in the snow, but if they are factory siped I don't think it will make a big differance. Any ideas if they are or not or if it is a practice that the do around here??

I am still on the wall about siping our tires. I have heard good and bad. Some love the way the play in in the snow and more control on ice. Some say sand will wedge in, causing small lugs to tear free.

So far there are more people saying it is a good way to go.

I was worried about the rocks and sand as I live in Lake Havasu. [If you think Las Vegas in in an ugly area, add 85 miles of worthless, and that's us] The rocks out here are incredible to insurmountable. I took the AV out in the sand and such on the first day expecting it all to load up the tires, but surprisingly it didn't. I don't know why it didn't, but nothing so far. I'll go offroad and ghost towning this weekend and let you know what's up.

:DHere's a cut and paste from the string that made me do the siping. I loved it before I went even the first mile. You can't imagine the difference in road noise. You can put the windows down and you can't even force yourself to hear the tires. I just happened to be going through Victorville the week after this post so I stopped and had it done.

I was really stoked on this topic so I did more research.

I looked up "tire siping" on Yahoo and got directed to several sites. The best was discounttire.com. So I looked it up and started calling around for discount tire dealers that are "siping equipped".

Wow, this is where the "theory comes clashing against reality" sets in. I was surprised that nobody in Las Vegas sipes anymore. Couldn't find it in Phoenix either.
I found one dealer in Victorville, CA that will sipe my tires for $10 bucks each. That is a great price for the following benefits:

1. 64% increase breakaway traction
2. 28% increase spinning traction
3. 22% improvement in braking and stopping distance
4. Extra traction, improved wear life, and increased heat dissipation.

Thay can only sipe tires with 50% of tread left. I only have 2300 miles so far and my stock Goodyears are practically new so they are a perfect candidate.

You are only as good as your tennis shoes as they say.
My Av's tennis shoes are gonna get a makeover soon.

ducksface,

Looks like you beat me to this mod!

I was supposed to be your guinea pig, remember? Back when we were discussing this in the thread called "GM lies-no stabilitrak for 03 Avs"

So it looks like you did go to the American Tire Center in Victorville on your way to LAX (y)

I was supposed to visit my mom in West Covina and since I was planning to pass through the Barstow/Victorville area, I was gonna have mine siped as well. She ended up visiting me instead...

well, thanks for trying them out--looks like they increased the price by $5bucks per tire just from the time they quoted me.

From what you are saying, looks like it is worth it. I am still planning to have mine siped and will compare notes with you ;)

What if anything does siping do to the tire warranty?

The Victorville trip was great. I was going to wait and hear from you, but.... They said standard charge is $10 but the tires are so big they charged the extra for anything 30" and above. Boy did they know tires at that store! They knew that 17's were on the 2003's, they knew the manufaturer stuff, they didn't try to sell me anything... in and out in 40 minutes.... I'm going to drive all the way there for my tires from now on.

Secondly, a rather snotty woman at one of the tire stores I called about getting this done locally, said that this would void the tire warranty completely. I can understand that I guess. I did just put about a mile of gashes in each tire. >:D

Siping a tire will not void a manufacturers warranty on workmanship defects. It will however void any warranty for ride disturbance/out of round.

I work in Houston, Texas for a large national tire retailer.
We have been siping tires in Houston for over 4 years now. Most managers would prefer to sell a better tire than charge an extra $10 for something that could possibly cause a manufacturer to deny credit on a returned tire. Of course we would replace any tire we sold and siped if there was a ride problem, but we would be denied credit.

One of my AVPs here in Houston is a recent promotion from Denver, CO. His views on siping are shared by most from the heat/humidity of Houston. Siping is very advantageous when used in the snow and ice, even when used off road in mud and sand.

I have siped the tires on my wifes car. We did see a huge difference in the snow and ice on a trip to Wisconsin, but only noticed a benefit here in Houston in the rain.

Talk to whomever you purchase your tires from and ask them if siping a tire would give you any benefits over a tire that cost that much more. Make sure that they will honor the full manufacturers warranty if they do sipe the tires.

:B: Good Luck :B:

I was sipping a beer when I saw this and wondered...what the heck is sipping a tire? I looked at the pictures on the link duckface provided and can't tell the difference. Maybe I should stop sipping the brew and check the pictures later! I don't get it.

Siping Puts ridges across the Knobbys on Your Tires. Does that make sense?

Like when they put ridges on concrete to give it more of a treaded feel.

The short answer:

They take a razor and cut shallow slits into your tire that run perpendicular to the direction of rotation. ?The slits are roughly 1/4" apart.

Thanks tiregod1 for the great reply.

I have 4k on the Wrangler AT/S's that came with this brick (P265/70R17), and wondering about the oem warranty.

Isn't that the episode where Sam, Norm, woody, cliff and others take Frasier out hunting those snipes.

man that was a funny episode.

Oh....siping....never mind(emily/gilda voice)

:) Hey LEX

You are correct sir. For example, we do not sipe Michelin tires. Michelin is the only manufacturer that already has full depth sipes.

Look at a passenger snow tire. http://michelinman.com/catalog/tires/arcticalpin.html#

They are nothing but sipes. Lots of little ridges to act as bitting edges. Works great for snow, ice and mud.

IMHO spend the money on a tire that best fits your needs.
I have a set of Mud Terrains(siped) on a set of Silverado steel wheels just waiting for some sunshine to go and get sloppy. Not something I would do with my Yokohama H/Ts (not siped). It really just depends upon your intended use.

:B: See Ya :B:
