Smell Rotten Eggs In Rear End When Under Tow

I tow a RV with my truck and it always smells like rotten eggs in the rear end. I was on a trip and went to several Chevy dealers and they said it was because it was new,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Wrong answer. I finally found a dealer that knew what he was talking about. He said they changed the rear end fluid in 2000 on all chevy trucks. They now use a different kind of fluid now. He said he could take that fluid out and install a fliud called GRAPE flavor, I know it sounds nuts, BUT. They changed the fliud and guess what?, NO more smell at all. :)

I believe this was covered before, try searching for "rear end smell" or "rotten eggs"

I think the consensus was that this smell was due to overheated/burned lube oil in the diff. Just changing it would be the fix. Going with "grape" flavor probably wasn't the essential step, although I guess it doesn't hurt.

First post, huh? Welcome to the club!

Hey Rickjscruffy

Theres more to it than just changing the fluid I went through the same thing. I will look up the part numbers tonight but the breather tube and vent for the rear end need to be changed the original is to small and the rear end cant breath and overheats when under load The dealers shoud have TSB on this
