Smog readiness

old skool said:
Took the truck to the dealer this morning for the rpm issue and $140 later, I got that fixed. While I was out, I plugged in my bluedriver to take some readings and to my amazement all smog checks except one (evap) was in the green. So I headed to the emissions station and happy to say, it passed. Truck seems like it?s running a lot more smoother also. Thanks to everyone that gave helpful information. (y)

(y) good deal What did the dealership do to get it running smooth

I think the thing that?s got it running better was the cleaning that I did on the throttle body. The dealership just did the relearn on the throttle body.

Outstanding!

So, I plugged in my bluedriver after a little over a week to see if the last smog check had completed. It now only shows one test complete (Catalyst). Why would the other tests that showed complete, go back to not completed? I haven't disconnected the battery...Just curious  ???

Maybe it's the bluedriver device ???

Hey brother I am having very similar problem with my 03 avalanche. Can’t get to he O2 heater test to run.
About a month ago the same throttle body code came up on my truck and went away the next time I started my car so I am very hopeful we may have been in the same boat. I feel like I have tried EVERYTHING.

just to confirm, you just cleaned out your throttle body and then drove it some more and it was able to perform the test-?

thank you

Hey brother. I am having a similar issue with my 2003 avalanche. I’ve got the same throttlebody code about a month ago and it went away the next time I started the truck So I didn’t think much of it. I’ve tried everything else and after reading this forum I’m hopeful that it is the same issue you had.

just to double check-, you just cleaned your throttle body and drove some more and it ran the O2 heater test?

Yes, I removed the intake pipe and sprayed some cleaner in the TB...It's best not to move the TB plate or you'll run into the problem of having to get the TB relearned. I then got on the freeway and drove it for about 20 miles.

Awesome thanks. Would you recommend opening the throttle body manually by using the gas pedal? I don’t know how else I would be able to get into clean it without having to have it relearned.

I always find this interesting.

I have removed and manually cleaned every throttle body on both of my trucks, every other GM engine and our Toyotas we own and I have never had any issues with "relearning" after a good cleaning.

I have even installed a new throttle body on my EXT and the prescribed DIY relearn procedure worked like a charm.

Throttle body relearn procedure.

Whenever one of my engines has the least sign of a rough idle, I pull the throttle body and mass airflow sensor and clean them both really well with the correct cleaners for each.

I understand some may have had problems, but I really scrub my throttle bodies with spray cleaners, old toothbrushes and shop rags and have never seen any reason to not do it again, if needed.

Maybe I have just been lucky.

I would suggest that even if you do not want to completely clean your throttle body, at least pull it off and see for yourself just how much gunk gets built up on the downstream side of the thing.

That can be pretty eye opening.

Yeah, I did everything I could several times to avoid spending $140 and taking it to the dealer. Relearn just wouldn't work for me.
