Hi Everyone! Here is a recap of the entire day and a some photos... We had fun! The weather couldn't have been better and it was very clear especially in the morining! We didn't have a great number of AVs, but the people who did come were GREAT and that's all that really counts.
I want to give a big thanks to all those who came...and for those who couldn't make it... Hope to see you next time!
Well the gang meet in Phelan at McDonalds at around 9 a.m. Once everyone was ready we all pulled out onto the highway to head out to Calico Ghost Town. Traffic wasn't bad and we had no problem staying together.
We cruised together on I-15 for approx. 60 miles. Once we arrived in Calico we met up with CAFCNA member (VegasShawn & Family) from Las Vegas, NV. who drove out to join us for the day. We took some photos of the AVs and a group photo in front of the entrance to Calico.
Our members & their families who attended:
Wind4Power & SoCalCindy, Supermobile, Xrover, Aegis, Size_Matters, jst4f, King Avalanche, Tucomp, Sunset_Z71, ?& VegasShawn.
Next, we all went to explore the town.... Some in groups, others on their own. After lunch.. we all met back down at the AVs and to talk about the optional offroading portion of the trip. Owen (jst4f) made maps for all who planned to go. At first, we (SoCalCindy & Wind4Power) didn't plan on taking our AV offroad because it's 2WD, but we changed our mind and decided to give it a shot and went along....What the heck..we'd have 5 4WDs along to help us out if we needed it!
So we headed to Daggett and onto "Daggett Wash Trail." The first portion of the trail ended up being a bit rougher than the last portion of the trip. Most of the trail was OK but it got a little rocky in some places and a little narrow in others due to brush. At one point, I hopped out of the truck to do a little creative "pruning."
I think we all might have gotten a little bit of "offroad pinstriping." Unfortunately, Sunset Z71 snagged a rock and suffered some damage to a tire and wheel. At the halfway point, we stopped and those who didn't want to continue on or needed to head home, had the opportunity to take a road back to Hwy 40.
And we continued on... The roads on the next portion of our offroad adventure opened out into some nice long wavy stretches. That was fun! You know kinda like ridin' a rollercoaster.
We had to stop a couple of times to "pow wow" and recalibrate our compass's... but that was all part of the adventure of it! We arrived at our final destination to see some ancient lava flow and petroglyphs. We saw lots of lava rock and I mean lots! But to our untrained eyes... we couldn't find any petroglyphs. But I still had alot of fun getting there!
It was starting to get late, so we all hopped back in the AVs and headed out towards home. The roads home were good and we had fun the entire way back to Hwy 40. Here is the view out my window...
All in all, I'd say the roads and trails we travelled were challenging at some points but manageable. Once back to the paved highway we stopped and waited for all to catch up and decided to stop on the way home for some dinner. Traffic on the way home wasn't bad at all at least for me it wasn't.
Thats it folks! Ken, and I had a great time!
I hope that everyone who attended did too!
I took about 125 photos of the day's activities and chose about 40 that I posted in the meets/cruises feature page on the So Cal Homepage.
