A well designed cat-back should help, not hurt your overall performance. Somewhere on this site I believe there should be a post by muffman saying that the Gibson cat-backs are very good at helping the low end, although apparantly at the expense of top end performance.
When I had the Flowmaster 70 installed my exhaust guy mentioned that we wanted to be careful about opening it up too much because that would affect low-end torque; he mentioned something about too little back pressure causing that but I'm no expert. He has years of experience and I trusted his advice so went with simply replacing the factory muffler with the Flowmaster, his point being that a two in one out configuration with large pipes should be pretty good, that addition of the Flowmaster would open it up some but not too much. Of course he offered that he would switch out for a 2 in 2 out if I wanted at no additional charge . I'm happy with my set up.
