Welcome to the
"Grand Canyon of Texas"!

Palo Duro Canyon State Park consists of 16,402 acres in Armstrong and Randall Counties, south of Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle. The land was deeded by private owners in 1933. From 1933 until 1937, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) sent six companies of young men and military veterans to Palo Duro Canyon to develop road access to the canyon floor as well as the visitor center, cabins, shelters, and the park headquarters. The hard work of these dedicated individuals was important in the establishment of Palo Duro Canyon State Park which officially opened on July 4, 1934.

Activities/Tours: Park activities include camping, horseback riding, hiking, nature study, bird watching, mountain biking, and scenic drives.

While in the park, stop by and enjoy our Visitor Center located on the Canyon Rim. This rustic native stone building was constructed by the CCC in 1934 and houses a Museum and Museum Store. The store is located in the Visitor Center and features books, potter, jewelry, and educational items pertaining to the Canyon.

Area Attractions: Nearby activities include Storyland Zoo for Children, Nielsen Memorial Museum, Lake Meredith National Recreation Area, Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument, Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, West Texas A&M University, Wildcat Bluff Nature Center, and Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Click here for the Amarillo Convention and Visitor Council.

It is a beautiful place. I remember my parents taking me there a few times as a kid. I have yet to visit the Canyon as an adult. I cant wait. I hope you schedule allows you to come and visit.

I was there last year for July 4th, it was really nice. I grew up about an hr south of here in the Plainview/Lockney area. This year it should be really nice due to wet weather they have been having.

There is a restaurant nearby in Tulia that serves pretty good Catfish on Friday's if anyone is interested.

Kewl have to chek it out maybe toe perfect way to cruise for Goo

I have not seen a final plan for the event yet. Is it going to be one day in the Canyon park and a cruise on Sunday? Is this a National Park and is there an admission charge? I am asking because we are planning on going on west to the MEGA MEET in California and it may be better if we were to buy a National Parks pass.
Are we all to bring our own food, is there a pitch in or do we go out to eat? I am trying to decide if I need a room for 2 nights or 3. We would get there Friday evening and go to the Canyon Park on Saturday, just not sure about staying for Sunday yet. Do we have a meeting place in the park reserved? are there restrooms close by :D? Maybe I have missed some of these answers but I thought I have read through everything.

ADDED:

I did find this on the Parks calander:

September 11 - 2004 - Palo Duro Canyon SP - Palo Duro Canyon Legacy 2004 - Riders in the Sky will headline a fund raising event at the park. Opening will be Academy of Western Artists Male Vocalist, Dan Roberts. A special 9-11 tribute along with a fireworks grand finale will add to the evening's events. 6-10:30 p.m.; general admission tickets includes a barbecue dinner and the evening's festivities $30 per person; reservations required, (806) 378-3096. (806) 488-2227. [Events at the Same Site] [Similar Activities] [Featured Events]

Are we sure that there is a area that we can all meet at that has some shade and facitiles for a group of the size that is expected with this going on or do we plan on being out of the park by 6PM?

Butch

Butch, I can't answer all your questions, but here's a few.

It's a state park, not national. There is a fee. I forget what it was.

I think food is a little bit of both. Texas Space is talking about cooking on his pit. Also, some people have talked about going out for dinner at least once, but no one has decided where.

There is a large picnic area in the park that can accomodate all of us. There is some shade, and restrooms are fairly close by. This area is a long way from where the concert will be.

I had asked at the Canyon Chamber of Commerce if there were any special events scheduled for that weekend and they didn't say anything about that concert. I figured the motels would be pretty empty, but this may make a difference.

Somebody needs to make some decisions!

As soon as some of these decisions are made we will reserve our room. We will probley stay at the Goodnight Inn if they have rooms available. We need to figure out how many nights we need to stay so we can plan the rest of our trip. If there is anything going on Sunday, let us know.

Butch

I will try to make an effort this weekend to pin down the plans for the Regionals. I was hoping someone would have a few suggestions for things to dao. We have found in the past that we decide once everyone gets there and it may happen that there are two groups that go in seperate directions

My Sister-in-law who travels all over the country says that Furrs is a great place to eat down your way. Any opinions on good eating places?

Butch

Dave,

I'm thinking seriously about going and bringing the ol lady along. If I do go, I'll probably pitch my AV tent and just stay one night. I'm not sure if I'll come Fri afternoon and leave Sat, or come early Sat morning and stay till Sun. A schedule of events would be very helpful. Also during the last GTG, you said you would be towing a pop-up down. I'm assuming all the campers will be staying next to each other. Are you guys reserving a block of camping spots? Also where will everyone be hanging out most of the time? In the camping area?

no I need to get a consensus of what a good place to meet, but I am thinking 20 something AV's wont be hard to find
most will meet at the hotel Make sure everyone brings your FM radio tuned to chanel 3 so we can communicate

havent made my reservation yet. Doesnt look like they are very full for campsites. and you cannot reserve a specific campsite, they are assigned first come first served upon arrival looks like

well now shows nothing available, wonder if I should just take my chances and get there early enough Friday to get any cancellataions

It shows virtually everything is available except for the premium cabins.

Availability

Campsites Hackberry (30amp), Mesquite(30/50amp), and Sagebrush(30/50amp) have electrical hookups. Sagebrush is relatively close to the entrance and is near the trading post. Hackberry is just down the road from Sagebrush. Mesquite is on the back side of the park, farthest away from the entrance.
