I think a option of a split tailgate would be nice! One that would hinge on the sides and open like dutch doors. This way you could open it up and be standing right at the bed and not have to load items over that big tailgate!

yeah, thats a great idea!! my nephews have a hard time getting things out of the bed of my av because the tailgate and its kind of high.

;D
On the big Chevy Stationwagons until they were downsized in '78, there was a dual-action tailgate that either dropped down or swung to the left side....that would be sweet now.....

Here is a pic of what I am talking about. This is made by Blackhawk but they do not make one for the Avalanche. They are expensive but just think how easy it would be to load your grocries!

Butch, how expensive (roughly)?
Just thinking, I like the look a lot, but might a pull out for the bed be a better option?
When I was a kid (before there was dirt ;)) A friend on mines Dad had one of those big ass GM land shark station wagons that had the double tailgate. They had the third row seat that faced backwards. We usewd to throw pingpong balls out the window and watch them come back.

Lincoln made the ill-fated Blackwood PU truck that had a covered bed and split tailgate doors. I have seen them and while they are neat they remind me of my wifes old Astro van doors and I try and forget that every chance I get.

What you need is the CAFCNA signiture bedslide - SOON to be available at a club near you. ;)

I am still working on my Swing Away Storage Box. I have bought the hinges and a few other parts and plan on making a prototype this weekend. I took my plans to a metal fab shop about a month ago and they never got back with me so I am looking elsewhere to have it made.

I know that the Av is supposed to be a muiltpurpose vehicle (SUV and pickup), but it is basically a pickup. If you would like the split tailgate, get a suburban or tahoe (or a F**d with the lift up gate). I love the tailgate feature myself. I do agree that a split 60/40 midgate to match the back seat would be a handy feature so that you could haul some big long stuff and have passengers in the back seat.

Just my opinion. ;D

I would like to see a split midgate so that I could still have seating in the back and haul long objects. I also wonder how many years it's goint to take GM to realize that it's dark inside the console! A flush light would be sooo nice!

;) You fellas got the right idea, on the split midgate. That's most of my reason for even considering an AV. This past weekend the family (self, 19yr son, six footer like the old man- that took care of the front seats. Wife and daughter, less than 5'8" each, in the back seat, with the cooler.), took a trip to Minnesota.

We took our Sheltie with us. So, the wife wanted the top off of the dog kennel, so she could interact with the dog. We're traveling in a '98 S-10 Blazer. Now that I can't stack things on top of the dog kennel. All the suitcases and Birthday presents, for the 90 year-old mother-in-law, were piled in around the dog kennel. The back seat was the only place for the cooler, everyone wants their beverages right at hand.

:cautious: Everyone was complaining that they didn't have enough room.

:0: Anyway, my thoughts were, if the midgate of an AV were split, this would allow access to the back. Pet the dog, get the drinks, whatever. And, back seat passengers would still have space.

:0: It's either that, or have a removable midgate. All the seats in place. Covered Cargo area, for those cold trips to Minnesota.

:3: Sorry, for rambling. But, that's my reasons for looking at the AV, anyway.

Sure hope I can get the financing together, when I find one. :-[

Hey, I never thought about just removing the midgate entirely. Unless you intend to take the bed covers off that might be a really good shortcut to the same desired effect (ie. pass through from cab into bed with half of back seat up). Great idea.

There was somebody a while back that was trying to come up with a mod that would allow you to quickly remove the midgate for this very reason...anybody heard anything else about that?

Hmm... did a search but could only find lots of subwoofer, and window screen threads and a great one about 3-piece split midgate that I had previously missed somehow. I did find a few references about how easy it was to get the midgate removed though, so would just have to rig some kind of quick release instead of having to use tools to take the 4 nuts at the bottom of the hinge out. I still like the split midgate idea best though.

Could cut hole in center of midgate where window is stored...and get a MARINE hatch type thingy.....

they make round ones about 12" dia....and they have screw on lids...or hinged ones....

Here is the topic: http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php?board=118;action=display;threadid=17712;start=msg284674#msg284674. Guy was worried about eventually stripping bolts but it doesn't look like anything was resolved.
