Starting issues

My 2002 chevy avalanche z71 starts up and runs fine every day, but once in awhile when I've been driving throughout the day it won't start and I'll have to wait 15-20 mins then it starts. What would be the possible cause?

Welcome, how old is your battery? It is harder on the starting system to start a hot motor and it may be putting a strain on the old battery.
If questionable may want to go to an auto parts store and have them load test your battery.

what do you mean?
Does engine turn over with starter and not run?

Or it does not even turn over?

If the engine turns over and just doesn't start, it could be many things. However, when that type of behavior happened to me in my K1500, it was the fuel pump going bad. Behavior was random and over a 1-year period each episode became more frequent until it was permanent (i.e. no starty, dead fuel pump).
