OK, here's some informal accelleration comparison info for my Avalanche, thanks to a couple of weekend street runs against my son and his pickup. The vehicles:

My 2003 Avalanche 1500, essentially stock with 5.3 V8 and 3.73 posi gears :B:. Has about 1800 miles so it's really not well broken in yet. My son's truck, a 1988 GMC Sierra 1500, straight cab 2wd pickup, 8' bed with a hard cover on it. The truck has a 5.7 V8 with GM's throttle body fuel injection, K&N air filter, 4-speed automatic, 3.08 posi gears (a real disadvantage for him - late '80s approach to improving gas mileage), and a Ravin cat-back system with dual outlets. The truck has just over 60k miles total, has been in the family since new so it's in very good condition.

The setup: early Sunday morning, not much traffic out, a couple of runs from stoplights - one from a roll at about 20mph, the other from a standing start. My son has just himself in his truck, I have myself and my wife plus my daughter and her friend.

First run, 20mph rolloff. We're approaching the light as it turns green. I nail it first and get barely a half-car jump on my son. He's into it hard also, but never gains on me. I back off as I pass 70mph in a 50 zone. A virtual dead heat, however, I've definitely got a lot more weight to move along.

Second run. Next light, a full stop. The light turns green, my son gets a jump on me. He's about 1 car length in front of me, however, we're both into it all the way and I start slowly gaining on him. We quit as I pass 60mph and an approaching turn. If we'd have gone to a quarter mile I would have probably caught him, again, a virtual dead heat but shows the power of the 5.3 given my weight disadvantage. (y)

My son was not too happy afterwards. I think it kind of blew his image of how powerful his truck was :-[. Especially since it sounds so much better than the Avalanche! He wants a new rear end now. It will be interesting to see what the Av does when it gets some mechanical mods!

Yep, I know there were lots of differences, and this was definitely a SOTP thing - nothing scientific here. I just enjoyed finding out that the Av can really get up and haul with a load of passengers, compared to a definitely lighter pickup, albeit one with a rear-end gear disadvantage.

I ran into a little p*ssing contest on the way to work this morning with a fellow GM'er...driving a Yukon....guy comes up along side and gives me the glance..so I just look and look away again...next thing I know I'm hearing him downshift....look over and the guy is pointing down the highwayl....so I say to myself sure why not.....being that we were cruising pretty good he never got any kind of distance on me....by the time we were winding things down.....he had this look on his face like "I can't believe I couldn't pull away from this guy..." oh well just goes to show you, don't underestimate the AvOlanche... :B:

Hopefully i will not get a lecture on this, but since you are all spilling it, last week after my sons football game on the way home noticed a little ricer coming up behind in traffic darting in and out. When he come by me i jumped out and on his a-- and of course the light turned red.
I don't think he could help notice the silver stars in his rearview since he was lowered and had the big fin on the back. My son is 10 years old and was saying get em"
light turns green he gasses it i gas it and jump into the lane beside him, so i started behind him. At 70 he was on my back bumper and we were going down into a depression that goes under a railroad track. Could hear the flowmaster well. I look at oncoming traffic and see a city cop sitting at light we are going through in the turning lane. Threw the AV into neutral and let it coast and ricer blew by me. I don't think he ever saw the cop.
Needless to say got up the hill took the first right and moseyed through some neighbor hoods real slow.
Then my son looks at me and says " why are you breathing so loud". I had to laugh and ask him when the last time he has been in jail for racing, or worse have to tell his mother >:D

LOL...hey Zeeya....did he ever spill the beans in the end anyway?.... :B:

NJAV, that is one thing i can say about my 10 year old son, he spills the beans on alot of things. Usually around Christmas/Birthdays he cannot hardly contain himself with the secrets, but when i say "MOM WON'T FIND ABOUT THIS, RIGHT". He usually does a good job. He knows it is Hunting season right now and he loves to hunt >:D
