Been browsing these forums for a while, just finally registered.

As far as installing subs on an Avalanche, the options are some what limited..

I am wondering if it's possible to mount two 12 inch subs in the bed, facing the cab. I only need to use the whole bed on a regular basis during the winter, so it's a possibility. However, I haven't seen anyone do this? Is the midgate too thick/dense to allow subs to be put back there while still rocking the cab?

Under and behind the seats seems like custom boxes are needed which can get costly... Any other options?

I am looking at spending $1,000 for a complete system in my 2002. That includes new speakers, amp and subs...

If your 02 has a center console with bucket seats, I would take that money and have a sweet custom center console built to replace the factory one and hide two subs in there!!! Now that would be a sweet setup... You should enough money to this as long as you pick a good shop...

Putting them in the bed is going to give you that muddy sounding bass...

P.S. Go with two 10's, they will be much cleaner sounding and will require a lot less space then 12's and be cheaper and need a smaller amp. Unless you are looking for BIG bass for Rap music...

If you put a sub in the bed, you will neet to port the bed in some way. Some people have left the midgate slightly cracked (not latched). Another way is to drill some ports in the midgate. This option is not for everybody because of resale issues. I will be putting 2 12's in my bed and will leave the midgate unlatched unless I get the ba!!s to drill holes in my midgate. If you just throw some subs back there without porting them into the cab it will sound like crap. The problem is with the bed being airtight.

So leaving the midgate unlatched will do the trick? If so, that's most likely the option I am going to take. That seems like the cheapest and easiest route to go.

I am using the subs for hip hop.. so if it sounds a little muddy, it's fine as long as it's not too bad.

I won't be using the subs when listening to classic rock/blues

Well, this is the response that I've gotten. After I move this weekend I should have my amp and subs installed for a test. If I don't like the sound with the midgate cracked then I will be buying some ports from Parts Express and drilling holes :cautious:.
