Well I have ran through all of the posts here on subs, and still have not seen something that looks like the way to go! ?I would like to see a couple of things! ?

1. What way have you decided to go? ?Behind the seat or under the seat! ?I am not ripping out my heating and AC (center seat), or going to lose the leg space (behind the front seats)!

2. If you have built a box or had one made, how about some hard dimensions! ?There has been enough people out there playing with this! ?Why reinvent what has already been done? Draw uyp some specs and place them up here!!

3. If you built a box, please include the speakers you have used! ?Along with are you happy with it! ?

I understand that this is one SOB of a topic, as everybody has a different idea on what to do! ?I just got my head unit and really would like to deck this truck out with a good sound system including a sub! ?I actually would like to go with 2 10" under the rear seats, with the amp in the middle! ?So it has been long enough, let's finially fix this damn thing and come up with a decent box! ?I am think of a trapazoid box under the seats should work!! ?Let's try to condense the information for people, as most of this posts had 25 pages!! Way to long to look through!!

From all the underseat applications I've seen it looks like you cannot fold the rear seat flat to fully utilize the mid gate. If this is not correct please let me know. I think I would like to have a small sub but not lose functionality of the midgate or the console. On the floor between seats is also out of the question.

Hi Wvusquatch,

1. What way have you decided to go? Behind the seat or under the seat! I am not ripping out my heating and AC (center seat), or going to lose the leg space (behind the front seats)!

Have you ever really checked out those little AC vents in the console? They honestly don't move enough air to be called AC ducts, but that is just my opinion. I'd happily rip those suckers out for a sub enclosure, even though I occasionally have three children in the rear seat. The vents effectiveness really drops to absolute zero when legs become involved in the equation also.

As for behind-the-seat (bts) vs under-the-seat (uts), the BTS setup would be more accomodating for midgate conversion, due to the fact that the seats would fold and the box would move forward. A UTS box would involve lifting the seat bottom, picking up the box and sitting it out of the way, folding down the seatbacks, dropping the midgate, and finally replacing the enclosure. The UTS would be much easier to build for a DIY individual, since there would be no angles and such involved, and less of a depth restriction for the sub.

If you have built a box or had one made, how about some hard dimensions! There has been enough people out there playing with this! Why reinvent what has already been done? Draw uyp some specs and place them up here!!

I was asked to do this and had volunteered also, but my business and family have kept me too busy over the holiday season to get anything at all done. I know a couple others have built some, and I'm sure they'll happily post their dimensions as well. Hopefully, I'll have a chance to build one in the near future.

If you built a box, please include the speakers you have used! Along with are you happy with it!

Now this is the "SOB of a topic"! It is always sure to start arguments of which is better. The sound quality of a box will be relative to the owners expectations and knowledge of sound quality. A guy using a pair of JM Lab Grand Utopias at home will certainly have a different standard of "good" than the fellow that is pretty happy with his stock AV system, as will a rap fan vs a jazz fan. I'm not trying to insult anyone, just pointing out that this will merely be an opinion based section, and people should realize and accept that. Look back at the Subsolution's posts and how much controversy got started when those little things were analyzed thoroughly, even though the points were fact and acoustic science based.

This SOB subject is, because it is a matter of taste

So far I have built three under the D-rear seat

First I must state that ?even with no box, and only the Amp mounted on the floor in the center, the seat will not fold down all the way!!!!!!!!!
So lets throw, total fucntionally out the window--

I made all the boxes, quickly removable, because I frequently use my mid gate

the first box was [yes you are correct--trapaziodal]
24"L
5"H-F--- 4"H - R
13.5 W/F-- 14.75"W/R
ended up at .55 CF @ 5/8
its only real limitataion was driver Height ?4.675"
I first used the POlk GNX10-- fit nicely
pretty impressive for hard rock--lacking with rap-techno

The second box I increased the height by 1" F-R
This required the seats to be raised 1/2"and underside trimmed and the carpet pad to be removed------However
Got the driver height to 5.675---CF's to .60ish @3/4"

Both Boxes had a 3/4" top plate for added driver height

I then went with infinity 10" ref----WOW
---much better lower end ?
I think this setup would satisfy most ?people and I am running only 140W rms
and would fit other driver that handle higher power
Both of these boxes can be listened to with the seat up or down--- and the seat will fold down to about a 45 deg angle which still allows some use of the midgate

When we have the next GTG- I will have some members corroberate this--

Now let me explain my system---
Stock--- OK if your over 60
HU and speakers-----Rocked thru the 60's and 70's
1st box--Really enjoy life and Music
2nd box--frequently turning it down--never thought that would happen--but I am over 40

I have a freind that can build these boxes--
projected price to be $100-150 w/o driver/plus ship
the question is, I here the 03 is different

Well I might have to with you second option, I am looking at the Kicker Solo-Baric L7 S8L74 after spending a fair amount of time looking at Crutchfield I think that I have found the system for my Avalanche!! I am going to build two boxes for under the rear seat and using the following! The Kicker Solo-Baric L7 S8L74, this thing has low space mounting and low volume! Well do you guys think this will work?

top-mount depth 4-15/16"
sealed box volume 0.33-0.75 cubic feet

L5 even though it is of lower quality only needs 4- 11/16 of space!

Of coure the advertising says that these things are equal if not better then some 10" because they can move more air space! So do you think Trapizoidal box could be buiild to make this thing work?

WV--
Yes it would fit in that size box
I forgot to mention in my earlier post
that there is a top 3/4 plate that the driver mounts in [shown in pic]
You could just cut that, to size the L78
the only question would be the cu volume

I heard one in a 1CF, behind the seat box and it pounded, but it did have/need 400w of power

The big question is??
Are you the type of person that is content impressing yourself--------or do you need to impress you neighbors

It is going to be tough to get any box of decent cu volume under the pass/rear

I would start with one and if not happy try two

THe problem i see is that your subs are to deep. look at pioneers TS-SW124D there only 4 inchs deep so your box does not have to be as big. then you could just put some quick disconects on the boxs wiering so that when you fold the seats down you can just take the boxs out.

I used one of these and they sound fine, no complaints. Check here for pics, dimensions of the box, etc..Also mine does not have to be removed to lower the midgate to stock level. More pics in my online album. Member loggie has 4-8" subs in similar boxes in the same post I linked.

Before I got my AVY I had a Tahoe and space just wasn't a problem I had two Kicker Comp 10's in a fiberglass box built into the rear corner.  I wanted to match that sound and performance but found no solutions without loosing the midgate fold down. I found some threads on here who built the speaker INTO the bottom of the back seat using those Pioneers.  I couldn't find them so I didn't get to hear what they sounded like.  I had to go with a 12 in Blaupunkt OD.  They have a mounting depth of 3 in.  and gave me a chance to build the box into the bottom of the rear seat.  My first attempt has not given me quite the result I wanted (Midgate won't quite fold all the way down)  I listen to all kinds of music and it has fairly good response.  I don't think it is anything that will shatter windows or rattle the car next to you but the output is pretty good.  In the speakers defense I only gave it .83cf of air space.  I plan on trying again  so that the midgate wil fold all the way down.  I have seen others do this with four 8's.  I have some pics and can you some dimensions if this is something your interested in.

Some have done it were the midgate will go all the way down so it can be done.

Hey Superman14, i am planning on doing what you did under the rear seat, i have a JL 13w5 which only needs .852 cu ft and a mounting depth of 2.6" is there any chance I can get your dimensions or plans you used? Were you able to get the mid- gate to lay all the way down? thx RS13

You are unlikely to get a response from Superman14 as he has not logged into the site since Dec 15, 2018.
