Well, upcoming order is still waiting the go-ahead from the finance queen (wifey) but figured I'd get all the details out of the way ahead of time and get some feedback here while I'm waitin. So that said, here's what I currently have penned out for my 2003 GM Option-1 discounted AVy order. Lookin for suggestions, experiences, comments, or heck, even an atta-boy. :)

For background on why I made some of the choices below. I plan on doing a little camping and a LOT of Mountain Biking with the truck (ie. light offroad). It won't be my commuter vehicle very often, but better gas mileage is still a plus to me. I don't plan on towing anything heavier than a small pop-up camper trailer in the forseeable future. I live in North Texas where the terrain is FLAT Flat flat. I put thoughts or questions in () below.

THE AVALANCHE

Z71 - 2003 Avalanche Z71 4x4

Light Pewter w/ Dark Charcoal Cladding
(Lighter color hopefully good for Texas heat and Light Pewter doesn't seem to show dirt as fast thought I think the dark cladding might negate that bonus.)

GT4 - 3.73 Axle Ratio
(Better gas mileage and I don't have much in terms of towing needs.)

QJP - P265/70R17 On/Off Road SBR BSW Tires
(EDIT: Picked the Black SideWall (BSW) ones thanks to Flynhigh's comment below, don't like the white letter look. Might try to do aftermarket ~275-285 tall (EDIT: Lowered that 10 also on Flyn's comments) if I can get the dealer to swap 'em and no serious fender work is needed. I will probably twist the torsion bar enough to get ~1" raise in the front if that helps. Also might see if I can find some tires that have "stiffer" sidewalls that I get the impression the 2500s have which helps in their lateral handling. Thoughts there?)

AN3 - ?Leather Reclining Seats with Driver memory
(So wife and I can both drive without constant seat sliding. Don't care about heated seats personally. Not sure yet if I should go with Natural Color Leather to come close to Light Pewter Color outside or with the Charcoal Leather to match the cladding and interior plastic. Not sure if the Charcoal Leather is hotter when sitting in the sun though. Any thoughts there?)

UC6 - Bose 6-Disc CR Changer Stereo
(Nice to have decent sound without having to do it myself.)

PDH - Driver Convenience Pkg
(Adjustable pedals help with short wife and I like the convenience lights/buttons. Not sure I want OnStar and don't think Front Side Airbags a priority in a vehicle that already does great on impacts.)

V54 - Black Roof Luggage Carrier
(Is this the one you need to add roof carrying accessories like the bike carrier? Figured I'd leave off sunroof to try to keep out some of the Texas Heat. I already have one on my Cavalier and don't use it often.)

BVQ - Tubular Chrome Assist Steps
(I think these look much better than running boards though I might consider getting them aftermarket depending on price difference. Nice to have them included in financed price though.)

Z82 - HD Trailering Equipment
(I DEFINATELY want the 2" trailer reciever and wasn't sure I'd get one at all without this.)

THE EXTRAS

- American Racing Custom Wheels
(From the GM Accessories web page http://www.gmgoodwrench.com/accessories/accessdetailAva_174.html. These look pretty kool. What do ya think?)

- Brush/Grill Guard
(Not sure yet if I want the GM one or an aftermarket. Lots look good, but I'd really like whichever one I choose to be able to handle a light bump if necessary without scratching, flaking paint, or setting off the air bags.)

- Side Window Weather Deflectors
(I hear the tape comes loose so thinking I'd prefer the aftermarket ones that attach inside the weatherstripping. Does your window still close fully and shut out wind noise with those?)

- Molded Hood Protector
(Haven't seen one with AVy logo yet, but probably will get the smoke one without logo.)

- Windshield Graphics
(Dunno if I want this on the front, or maybe would look good on the back window?)

- Black-Out Headlight/Taillight covers.
(I REALLY like the slick look on these aftermarket ones. I saw a pic on this site from someone who had them.)

- Custom Molded Splash Guards
(I like the finished look of these but hear they're not suggested for offroading because they can catch/tear and sometimes do cladding damage when they do. I don't think I'll run into that problem where I'll be, but anyone have any experience with that? What kind of terrain are they prone to snagging on? Maybe will notch them intentionally so they break away easier or something.)

- Pickup Box Extender
(I like the look of these and think they'd work well for keeping groceries near the tailgate while driving/stopping. Also looks like a good place to attach a Bike Fork Clamp for carrying bikes inside the bed.)

- Bed Sport Tent
(Think I'll skip on this and stick with a real tent.)

- Vinyl Floor Mats.
(I like the large size, durability to Mtb Mud/Dirt, and Gold Bowtie logo.)

- Second Row Seat Liner
(Gotta keep the seat nice lookin when hauling house fixit stuff from Lowe's and when the dog is in the back.)

- Hot/Cold Beverage Console
(MAYBE. Sure looks nifty though.)

That's about all I can think of at the moment short of getting into some of the Mods I've seen that help both HP and MPG. Those all look like lots of good fun to me. Can't wait to mod a bit but I'll hold off on drooling over those for now.

Tires - ?BSW ?- Black Side Wall
? ? ? WOL - White Outline Letters (on Sidewall)

I am pretty sure that is what they mean.

Looks like you're AV is going to define "Fully Loaded"
:)

Not sure whether or not you could fit those tires on 17" rims with just torqueing(sp?) the torsion bars. ?I had to do a Rancho 4" lift and reduce my rims to 16" to fit my 305s.

Well, the Wheels from GM do come in both 16" and 17" so could get them in 16" like you did. I thought I read in another post though that sidewall stiffness on the 2500 line was one of the bigger contributers to good handling so I thought larger wheels would help achieve that too. No experience otherwise though on tire/wheel sizing choices. Any thoughts?

I did lower the size tire I was hopin to fit in there 10 based on your suggestion down to 275-285. I'd also thought about getting a small body lift (2-3") but not right away when I purchase the truck. Can you offer any advice on Body vs. Suspension lifts? I heard body were easier to install and cost less generally.

In general I just hate it when companies undersize the rolling stock on a truck. It takes a LOT away from the appearance. GM hasn't done that on the AVy, but a little bigger always looks better on a truck to me. From what I read on this site so far, if I can find something that looks nice (DuH!), has a 4.5" or so offset (which has given others about a 3" wider stance and filled out the wheel wells), and about the tallest tires that will fit under lightly modified stock fenders that will make me happy. The 2-3" body lift will probably come later but I really like the way those usually look too.

Thanks again.

TXAVy,

A bodylift is considerably cheaper then a suspension lift. ?My suspension lift was $1900 without labor  ?I think a Body lift will only cost about $600-$800.

Personally I do not like the looks of body lifts. I am not real keen on seeing the frame under the body.

There was a thread about max tire size in the "performance" or "4x4" forums on this board. ?I will see if I can find it and post it here. ?If you want to see pictures of my AV lifted w/305 mud terrains then click the link in my signature down below.

bah!! Darn copy/paste :8: Anyways click on search above and put in "max tire size" that will list a thread for you to read regarding what others have done and found.

Flynhigh,

I know what ya mean about the frame showin, but personally don't think it looks bad as long as the lift is on the small side. More than 3" and I'm right there with ya though.

When I last owned a truck (5-7 years ago) I think the trend for price/performance was to go body lift up to about 3", then switch to suspension if you wanted somewhere between about 4-8", and finally use a combo of both if you need 9" or more to get ya grinnin'.

I think you made the perfect choice for your truck and the 4" of extra flood protection there. It looks great.

Max tire size has been discussed in several different threads, but with stock suspension this is what it comes down to:

In a 16 inch wheel you can fit 285/75/16's with just minor fender mods (see the "Agressive Tires" thread in the 4X4 driving forum...) There is one fellow on here who managed to stuff 295's on the stock suspension, but had to do some more major fender mods as I recall.

This doesn't take into account any slight differences Chevy may have made to the '03 models.

Crexis,

Those tires look GREAT! They're 285/75/16's you said? What Brand/Model if ya don't mind my askin? I'll go see if I can dig up the other thread you talked about before putting too much of this discussion here though.

THANKS!!!

Hi TXAvy.

Congrats on receiving permission from the Finance Queen!

You really don't need to buy everything that GM is selling, j/k. ?Your Av will look like a rolling GM accessories catalog.

I had the mud guards on my truck but as soon as I put on larger tires I ripped both of the front guards off. ?The Av doesn't have too much tire clearence, I wouldn't decrease it any further. ?I kept my mud guards on the back tires and they look fine. ?

The brush guard might look good but it adds a lot of length to you front end (might not be able to fit your Av in the garage) and if you want to, it dosen't come with anything that can be used to mount some fog lights to.

Please get the 4.10 gears! ?I didn't and I regret it. ?There isn't a noticeable change in gas mileage and the shorter gears really do help move the AV around. ?Please don't short change your self on performance for something that you can get for free! ?If your getting bigger tires, the 4.10 gears will even things out.

I have a body lift and I love it! ?You've seen my Pics, it doesn't look bad. ?If you have the chrome nerf bars you'll cover most of the frame anyway. ?Don't change your suspension and raise your center of gravity just
for looks, just get the body lift. ?My truck with a 3" body lift has larger tires then most Avs with 6' inch suspension lifts. and.. you won't void your warranty with a body lift like you will with the suspension.

There's my 2cents ;D

Bradyb,

It is truly a matter of oppinion on whether to go body or suspension. Personally I do not like body lifts, makes the truck look no quite right IMHO.

Something else to think about when comparing lifts...

Rancho 4" lift is really a 5" lift overall. Pro Comp 6" lift is really only a 5" lift overall. Neither will allow for 35" tires without some rubbing. To get 35" or bigger tires you really need to start looking at both body and suspension lifts done at the same time. This is why your 3" body lift has the same 33" tires as some 6" suspension lifts.

It all comes down to personal preference and pocketbook size. Body lifts are considerably cheaper then a suspension lift. Mainly due to the number of new components you get with a suspension lift.

I'm not knocking the suspension lift too much, the reason I have 16x10 wheels is so later down the road I can add a 6 inch lift and fit 38's. I got the body lift, wheels/tires as the first step towards my monster truck. It isn't too practicle right now as our AV is the family truckster for my wife and baby.
I'm usually stuck with driving the grandma 300M.

TXAVy

Just my .02 - I am a mtn biker and I would hate to put bikes on top of the AV - it would be a pain. I use a hitch mount and it works very good.

Congrats on getting your AV

I think I'd agree. Long way up to the top of the AV unless you're standing in the uncovered bed. I'll probably end up using a hitch mounted rack or just put them inside the bed itself. Was thinking a fork clamp attached to the bed extender somehow might work out well but time will tell.
