Superchips 2295 '02 1-2-shift help

Hey all, first off all let me say that I'm not really an avalanche owner, but I own a Silverado, and it seems that as far as drivetrain is concerned, they are pretty much the same. I've just spent the past few hours reading through the Computer mods section of this forum and I've gotta say it has some of the best info i've found anywhere related to programmers, so that's why i'm posting here to seek an answer to my question.

I have a 2002 Silverado LT with a 5.3. Recently I purchased a superchips microtuner off of ebay. The auction was kindof misleading and I thought i was bidding on the new 2715 programmer, when infact it was an older model 2295. This model is for 2002 model trucks only, and lacks some of the features of the newer version. (I got it for 227.00 shipped so I wasnt too upset.) The question I have seems to be something that a few avalanche drivers are complaining about for the predator. The 1-2 shift @ WOT is really loose. I mean it is bad, almost like you were driving a manual tran. and let the clutch out really slow instead of shifting fast and firm. The shift seems to occur at a good rpm point, but is just really loose. All the other shifts seem fine and i'm pretty pleased with the low end power gain and part throttle shifts.

I'm wondering does anybody know about this model of tuner or any probs with it? One of the things I read about on here was posted by a guy from runninwiththedevil (forgot his name at the moment), and he said something about a maximum shift pressure on 2002 model trucks being some kind of problem. Could this be what is going on? I havent tried to call superchips but I emailed them a couple of weeks ago and never got a response from them. This 1-2 shift thing is really starting to bother me and I know this just CANT be right. Either it's not supposed to do that from the programmer, or they screwed up when they developed the programmer. I've read alot of stuff on this forum about older superchips frying ECM's and it kinda is making me feel lucky I got it to work at all.

Now I'm wanting a predator programmer and thinking about reselling my superchips on ebay, but I think I would be happy with what I've got if there's something I'm overlooking that could fix my problem. This model of tuner has no customizeable settings really except for speed limiter and tire size. So if there's no way to get my programmer reflashed to a newer version or something, I'm just screwed I guess.

Any info or advice you guys might have or picked up somewhere else would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance.

I don't have any experience with SC but I would continue to try to contact them. There have been issues with the Av concerning 1-2 shifts. It could be that the SC is aggrivating an existing problem with your Silverado. This was also a problem with Predator. I got a custom tune to cure it. If the programmer has no serial port so that updates can be uploaded to it, you will probably have to send it to SC and I'm sure they will charge you.

I have the 2715 version. I did notice a little slippage in the 1-2 so I just raised the shift pressure setting 1-2 ticks above the SC tune and shift firmness 3 ticks. Seemed to do the trick for me.

BTW I have an 03 Z71 5.3.

Well I wish my superchips had the option to change the shift pressure. Like I said before, the only user customizeable options are speed limiter on/off, tire size correct, gear ratio change. There must be some kind of problem with the way they programed the superchips to work with the trucks in '02 model year. Maybe a difference between transmissions within the same model year. I'm probally just going to sell of this superchips and stop screwing around with it, and buy me a predator. If anybody else knows anything about this 1-2 shift issue, please post it! Thanks.

dehart,

I got my SC 2715 two weeks ago and installed the program on my 02 5.3L Avy, 36K miles and it shifts bad from 1-2 only. All others are OK. I raised the preasure to Max and moved the shift point up and down with no real firmness shift difference. I'm going to call SC hopefully before Friday 1/23 and ask if there is a fix. Under WOT the 1-2 shift is worse than stock, I think.

Yea that's exactly what I mean. My 1-2 shift feels worse than stock also. Do me a favor and post a follow up on here if you find out anything. I just ordered a predator last night and i'm gonna auction off my superchips. My main concern now is that there isnt actually something wrong with the transmission that is causing this problem in the first place. I'll let you all know if the predator makes the difference when I get it in.

dehart,

Just got off the phone with the tech services guy and explained the situation to him. All he did was listen take a few notes, request my number and tell me he would check it out and get back to me. He could not or would not offer any solutions or even a time frame as to when he may know something. I sent them an e-mail two days ago and have not received a response to it either. So if you ask my opinion I think they know they have a problem and do not have the solution yet.

fatjac,

Yes I totally agree with you. All I can say is that I cant stand the way my truck is shifting right now 1st-2nd. I have a diablosport predator on it's way right now from www.runninwiththedevil.com. I hope this programmer will do better than the superchips on my truck. I'll let you know. If you are interested in a predator, i highly recommend runninwiththedevil, the tech people there are knowledgeable and reply to emails quickly. They will do custom programs for you free of charge if you have any quirks or problems that need to be worked out.

dehart,

I'll give SC until Monday afternoon and then I'm calling back and it wont be nice this time. Thanks for the info and I'll check the sight you suggested. I'll keep you informed.

dehart,

Talked with a guy by the name of Don who has instructed me to send the tuner back to SC for an evaluation. Since its been over 30 days I have to prepay the return freight back to me which I think sucks because if it's there fault it should be free anyway. Sending it back today UPS with an approved return #. We'll see what happens next. If it took almost a month to get this information who knows how long it well be to get it fixed.

Good luck on getting a solution to the 1-2 shift. I have a stock '03 AV 1500 that shifted fine from 1-2 until the dealer had to repair the transmission (under warranty) to fix 3rd & 4th gear failure. Since the repair, it now takes up to 2 seconds for the transmission to complete the 1-2 shift. So far, I've had no luck in even getting this defined as a problem let along getting any action towards a fix.

fatjac,

Well it appears that we are both returning a superchips at about the same time. I lucked out because the people I bought mine off of on ebay has a performance shop and made me out a reciept for it as if I had purchased it new from them. So I'm actually getting a chance to send it back to them. Also, I havent posted since my lastest problem. I have a new predator sitting in the closet and cant use it because my stupid superchips cant put my stock program back into my truck. It says it had and error and now the thing is stuck unless they can fix it. Now all i'm hoping for is to get the truck back to stock and maybe get SOME money out of the used superchips. It's killing me that I have this new predator and cant use it.

I've only been part of this club for a short while now but have learned a ton. This is a great site ;D I have been set on buying the superchips programmer for a few months now, but after hearing some of the issues that have come about, I think I'll wait awhile to see if they get straightened out. Is the diablosport programmer the same as superchips, hypertech as far as performance gains? I checked out the runninwiththedevil website, but they don't give a very detailed description of what exactly this programmer does compared to the others.

shookman,

The website you need is www.diablosport.com That is the official website from the company with all the detailed info. You can even actually download the instruction manual for the predator on their site. Runninwiththedevil is an actual retail seller of the tuner. As for your question about the performance gains, not only are they just as good from the predator, but you can customize and control 10 times more settings than you can with either a superchips or a hypertech. The only downfall is that the unit will be married to your truck FOREVER. So you definently wouldnt want to test a predator out on your buddy's truck first, because it would never be able to program another truck. The price is maybe only a little more expensive for the predator, but dont be cheap like me, I wanted a bargain and shopped on ebay. Not only did the superchips NOT do what I wanted, but now I cant get it off of my truck. Like they say, you get what you pay for.

Thanks for the info, after looking around at different programmers, i think I'll go with the diablosport. Was hoping for a better price on one but $419.00 seems to be the going rate for them, so I guess I'll pay the going rate since it doesn't sound like you'd want to get one off of ebay or second hand. Unfortunately this purchase may have to wait a little while as this morning, my other vehicle, a 92 regal was victim to a deer attack; so it's off to the junkyard for another grille, headlight assembly, fender and hood. :C:

UPDATE: After about 2 months of waiting and waiting from superchips, I finally got my truck back to stock. I had to send my tuner back to them twice, each time taking about 2 weeks from the time I sent it untill it was back in my hands. The second time I had to return the unit, they just went ahead and replaced it with a new model number 2715. The truck then was programed back to stock flawlessly.

I AM NOW RUNNING THE PREDATOR!!!! I finally got to install it after removing the supershits from my truck. I havent had a chance to fine tune anything with it, just put on the normal performance program, and MAN, it is already a big difference. When the truck hits about 3500 rpm it really throws you back. I dont know how there could be that much difference between 2 tuners but it feels alot more powerful with the predator.

My 1-2 shift @ WOT is still just a bit loose, but like I said, havent had the chance to fine tune anything yet. Shift timing and pressure is still set at 0%. I think I'm gonna go try it out here in a little while to see if I can make an improvement.

Okay after reading thru this thread about the superchips
Predator definately seems to be the better programmer..

let us know what happens when you fine tune it...

Also I recommend a Procold Intake for your silverado.
I put one in my Fiance's silverado and MAN! What a difference!
We have to conisistantly try not to peal out with it!
Do a search on this site for Procold intakes..

Aetatis.
