Fed up with work I took last Friday off for some R&R. I had just the trip in mind that I had been dying to do ? so I did it. As a fan of the AV and of Kayaking I paired the two with my new interest in fresh water fishing and had a blast. Here is my story?
It actually begins Thursday night with a night out on the town with one of my best buddies. I?m 32 now and have known J since we were pre-teens. J and I hit the bars and had a great time talking about our trucks ? My AV and his F350 Diesel. We recalled past exploits and talked about future ones too. At the end of the night - around 12:30am it was time to go home. I was so worked up about trucks and fishing I decided then that I would be blowing off work the next day.
Next morning ? after a few Advil and a Bacon, Egg & Cheese (S, P & K of course) - I loaded the Old Town Adventurer XL into the back of Avalanche. Now this Kayak is about 14 ft long but I can get it into the AV with mid & rear gates down. Best thing is I can keep the covers on and the window in making it easy to lock the truck up when I hit my destination. Grabbed my gear ? paddles, preservers, fishing pool, tackle and I?m off to Harriman State Park NY.
Make a quick stop at the sporting goods store on my way in to pick up a NYS Fishing License and some live bait. Next stop is the Ranger station to get the key to the Boat Launch. Hit the station, paid more $$$ and was headed for my destination.
I was the only one at the boat launch and the lake today ? beautiful. Get the Yak out of the AV and lock up the truck.
Hit the water ? man is it breezy! I paddle around for 30 mins or so looking for the right spot. It?s an island in the middle of the lake that is providing a break from the wind. I tuck into that spot and setup for some fishing. Sweet!
Hook up the live bait and in it goes. Spent an hour or so working my spot with no results.
Paddle back to the AV for a little lunch and stretch. Make a few calls to brag about my situation to the wife and then to J. Man, their jealous?
Back in the lake and paddle over to a new spot. Setup again and start working this area around a rock. Next thing you know ? fish ohnnn! Hooked up 3 times with some beautiful bright green bass!
What a treat ? I had never caught a fresh water Bass before. Plenty of Stripers, but never the fresh water variety. It was not disappointing.
Ran out of bait so I headed back to the AV. Packing up was easy as can be ? down with the rear gate, slide the Yak in, a few bungee cords and I?m off for home. Smiling and jamming tunes all the way.
Anyway, this was a great day where I got to combine my three newest hobbies ? the AV, the Yak and Bass Fishing. I hope to repeat this trip more than a few times this Fall before the snow takes over. It?s one of the main reasons I bought the AV-to get away for a trip like this. I thought I would share this story with you. Hope I didn?t bore ya.
