What gives? While cruising through town today I pulled up behind a late model Mercury Mountaineer full time all wheel drive. On the right rear or the vehicle was the name "Avalanche".

It was apparently the model of this Mercury version of the Ford Explorer. Anybody else seen this?

Could it be that the "General" stole the Avalanche name from Ford? Tell me it isn't so..........................

That's a new one by me. Never heard of that. I thought GM trademarked Avalanche. Maybe Ford didn't?

Probably an owner add-on, you know, wishful thinking.

I just did a search and could not find the Avalanche name on any Ford products! He might have copied from us.

Nope the General stole the name from an event that happens in the mtns when a 35+ degree slope gets loaded with unstable snow ?

The Mercury version of the Explorer is the Mountaineer, maybe the owners thought Mountaineer sounded cheesy and chose Avalanche because of its "awesomeness" (I bet he has truck envy) :p ;D

GM has a service mark on the Word Avalanche meaning that no car manufacturer can make a car called an Avalanche. It's quite possible Ford did not Service Mark the Avalanche name, GM didn't do enough research, or it was a dealer customized version like the SST Tahoe at Ramp Chevrolet in Jort Jeff New York.

Uh, oh!! Legal problem?? So we all might have to change the name on our trucks? ;D Or would this be limited to those with the same type of moral compass which prevented some from using Napster? >:D

It wouldn't surprise me to find that Ford may have used it on a limited edition Mountaineer (probably an AWD). I have seen a name on an AWD Explorer, which escapes me right now. But it is also a name currently being used on something else.

I doubt that the label was for a limited edition Mountaineer. I owned a '97 Mountaineer. Back in '97, and I believe '98 as well, all Mountaineers were AWD, and had standard 5.0l V-8. I think it was in '99 that they came out with a V-6 option. I believe they are all still AWD (could be wrong on this one).

It sounds more like something the owner put on, or the dealership, or we would have taken notice of them earlier.

Sorry, but they were never ALL AWD. I tried out a new '97 but couldn't deal with L/M so we have a '96 Explorer.

You are probably right. The left side of the tailgate read "Mountaineer all wheel drive" and the left side of the tailgate read "Avalanche" in the same letters as opposed to an after market decal or add on.

I will keep an eye out for it and try to get more information and a photo for you non-believers. Also it was before happy hour....honest.
