Thinking About A Midgate Modifiction

Let me bounce this off the group. Been thinking about cutting and flanging the mid gate at the single seat mark. Was at the Home Depot with my 2 sons and realizied that the 10 foot mouldings I was carrying would have to hang out. So I thought hmmm. If I cut the midgate dutch door style and provide an overlap to retain the original latching mechanism. Plus about a case of silicon sealant and some creative welding I could have the split foldown that would allow me to carry people and cargo just like a Jetta. I am actively looking at this in addition to propositioning the general. Let me know if you think. I kind of feel like with this really brite group we have had this idea before, or at least dreamed about it. Let me know...

I've thought about it, but you will have to be innovative. The whole waterseal issue is what bothers me the most.

Good luck! If you can figure a good way to do it, you'll make a mint in the aftermarket business. :)

Well did a search and found nothing then flipped over to Design flaws topic and someone mentioned the 60/40. Great minds do stick together only thing is I am going to try and make one...

I thought about it 2. Either 100% or nothing and the rear seats are 60/40 -- go figure. I couldn't get past the structural problem re the glass frame. Maybe only makin a small, independent trap door kinda thingy . . . .hhmmmm, back to the drawing board. ???

Yeh, the trap door idea would be easier to do and more reliable. ?Plus the integrity of the midgate seal wouldn't be an issue.

there a lot of boat hatches, that are waterproof, and about 18x12 inches, on up.

hinged, and lift out lids, with a frame about 2 inches. around the hatch

that would let you slip a longy thru, and not mess up the whole midgate.

hey, av trivia question????

how much is a whole midgate???

i think, just the window lists for around 1400 $$

whats the tab on the midgate??

There's been a midgate for sale on Ebay lately, it should end soon (next few days) and at last glance no one had bid on it and the price was around $100. ?If you want to practice on something this may be the way to go.

If we can get someone (Chief) to spring for the midgate on eBay. I will do this mod using a boat hatch (that sdjudson used in his storage access hatch). I just want to try this on a "spare" midgate in case I encounter problems/leaks. That way I can solve the issues and point them out (with photos) on what to do.

Chief, wanna bid on that Midgate for me as a CAFCNA project?
