I installed a Magnaflow muffler on my Avalanche last week. I purchased the muffler through TN AV03. He had installed this muffler on his Avalanche but then got a bead on a Corsa catback system and put his muffler and unused 3" tip up for sale for $75. Couldn't say no.

Overall Impressions Under The Av: I was shocked to see just how far back the muffler is on the Avalanche. Memo to self, if there is EVERY an exhuast leak around the muffler get it repaired immediately. I was impressed with the muffler placement, well out of the way for off-roading activity, it would take a very specific hit to damage the system. I was alarmed with the header coming off the driver side of the 5.3 liter V-8. I noticed it had been pounded flat and I was concerned that this had happened off-roading. The muffler guy told me that was "as designed" so it didn't hang down - however it made me wonder if the flow was restricted more coming off of the drivers side of the engine into the single exhaust.

Install: Had the install done but a local yokel chain called Bucky's. They do a lot of deep discounting advertising including Magnaflow mufflers for $59.95. Also did an oil change while there (Mobil 1 of course). The process took about an hour-and-a-half. Because the Magnaflow had been previously installed and had a small section cut off of it they had to do a small bit of pipe work. They replaced the section from the outlet that snakes over the axle - cost was $29.95. They charged one hour labor for the welding work (seemed high to me) for $70 so the whole install process with parts was $109.95. I wasn't thrilled with the cost but not horrified either. However I was EXTREMELY impressed that they brought me out to the shop and under my Av while it was on the lift to see the work they had done and ask me some questions on how to proceed with the install. You sure don't see that at many shops these days. The weld work was superb and clean - the guy clearly knew what he was doing and actually cared about his work. Kudos for that.

Sound: The sound from the muffler is excellent. On the outside there is a low growl at idle and although there is definitely a higher decibel level at acceleration is not obtrusive or offensive. Translation - flooring it in a parking garage does not set off sensitive car alarms. Cab noise is a different issue. Start up is incredible, there is a rumble in the cab that you can feel as you turn the key and as the engine idles down a faint growl. Under load things are pretty noisy between 1500 to 2000 RPM, more than I expected but not offensive. It is at it's loudest around 1,800 RPM. The noise isn't bad during highway cruising - only under load like hard acceleration or climbing a hill. Still I was under the impression that resonation from the Magnaflow was better than say the Flowmaster 50 series, which I've heard in cab on flyinhigh's Av - this seems a lot louder under load in a narrow band.

Performance: I think the install has hurt my performance in the area of starting torque. Low end torque is diminished to a noticable level. However the overall power curve seems a little wider and flatter with smooth power pulling over 2,000 RPM all the way to the 5,500 RPM shift point. I don't think that 0 - 60 time was seriously impacted, if at all - but low end grunt is reduced.

Conclusion: For $75 parts and $109.95 install I have no regrets. The sound is excellent without aggravating the neighbors. There is a decided and pronounced V-8 growl from the engine now. Low end grunt has suffered but the power curve SEEMS a little flatter and wider. The Magnaflow was GORGEOUS with it's glossy polished finish. If someone was doing it to get the sound I'd recommend. Not sure if it's the best performance mod bang for the buck if it's all you plan to do.

Anyway - that's my thoughts! ;D

What part # Magnaflow did you do?

I knew someone would ask this question - heh heh heh - I don't know anymore, I deleted the IM and it's no longer in the FS section. D'oh!

This maby be a silly question but does this muffler /exhaust mod have any impact on warrenty ??
TIA

Nope - unless you put some straight pipe exhaust with no mufflers and no catalytic converter on there. >:D >:D >:D

Chief,

My conclusions about the Magnaflow are similar to yours. The differences are that mine is a 8.1L and I did install a rather small Magnaflow for such a motor.

Installation: There wasn't that much info on installing Magnaflows on 8.1L's at the time. So mine was a trial and error. There are good hints and recommendations now in the forums.

Sound: Immediately upon startup, it growls pretty good then settles down to an almost imperecptible tone. The tone is fanstastic! It is not raspy or metallic, rather just a deep rumble. Any time the pedal is pushed closer to the floor, it wakens up. At highway speeds, it may bother some that ride in the back seat. I hardly ever notice it myself. I wouldn't call it a resonance, rather just a monotone. There is no perfect muffler, one that will sound like you want it at every speed or load. There are sacrifices at one end or the other. I personally think that the Magnaflow has done more for my truck's ego than anything else. But I probably went a bit liberal than the average insofar as choosing a muffler for subtleness. I am positive that if I had chosen the larger series muffler, the truck would sound more tame.

Performance: I can't say that I felt an increase in Hp/Tq after the Magnaflow. Heck, I can't say that much after the installation of my TOG's either. But after my Superchip programming, everything woke up tremendously. Sure I think that the Magnaflow helps out a good bit now, but I don't think that someone should purchase a muffler based upon potential Hp gains, at least not on the Avalanche. I don't think there's that much lost that far back. For the Avalanche, sound should be the guiding factor.

Conclusion: Mine can be loud at times, but that is what I wanted. Certainly Magnaflow can make them as quiet or loud as you want. Regardless of the decibles, the tone has been wonderful. I believe Magnaflow makes a very good product at a good price.

Boo.

I haven't been under the Av yet, is there a lot of pipe between the cat and muffler? That's the way the pickup is and that's where they (Flowmaster Cat-back System) stick the resonator to reduce the in-cab resonance. Not supposed to affect the flow any. It works. I used a FM 50 with resonator on my '01 Sierra and was very pleased. My '99 was too loud (inside - sounded great outside) so went to a 70 series. (Before they came up with the resonator thing).

Glad to hear that the install went well and that you are pleased w/the muffler and tip ?;)

I got the call from the local shop that the Magnaflow 12588 muffler I requested had arrived. ?I jumped in the Avalanche and had them start the install per 11h's advise (on another thread). ?An hour and half later, I was driving out with a sweeeeeet sounding truck. ? ? I had them put 3" slant cut stainless tips coming straight out the back. ?They did a nice job coming out of the muffler and over axle, clearing the spare, out the back.

Just as described, no in cab resonance, little difference between stock at cruising speeds (65-70) or around town (35-45). ?But, get on it and it sounds so nice. ?I couldn't be more pleased, the wife and kids don't complain either. ?

Thanks to 11h and the many others who provided excellent feedback which helped me make a decision I'm very pleased with. ?What a great board. ?"

Now that I know the muffler part #, I can eloborate a little... The 12589 (Aluminized)/14589 (Stainless) as you know is a Offset IN / Center OUT ... Inside, it is a straight (diagonal) shot from in to out... The 12579 or 14579 is a center IN/center OUT ... Although it is pretty different inside than yours ... The 12579/14579 is a single 3" inlet, then splits off inside to dual 2.5" pipes, and comes out 3" single... In order to use this muffler on the 5.3 av, a new mid pipe needs to be fabricated; the oem pipe won't work ...

The 3" -> dual 2.5" -> 3" design (12579/14579) was created to retain a little more "back-pressure", and help the in cab resonance a little... Personally, I have heard both and the resonance is similar... ?:cautious:

I currently have a 12579 full 3" cat back, and the resonance is like you said pronounced at between 1700-2100 under load like on a slight grade ... It's actually a little more significant over the Flowmaster 70 3" Cat-Back it replaced... But not by much ?:cautious:

On a positive note though, the Hypertech that's on it's way to you will help your bottom end response a tad...
