Thoughts on 5.3/trans build

OK my Av has about 236k miles on her and I really have no plans on parting ways for a replacement so it has now gotten to the time where a transmission rebuild is about required and I assume it is the original stock trans.

When I bought her a few years ago I was told by the car lot that it had a fresh motor installed recently but it could not be verified. I am thinking myself that info is false. While she does still run well and not smoke while running she has developed more and more noise like lifters ticking etc... I do not want to wait until she blows to rebuild, I try to be as proactive instead of reactive as much as possible so I am pondering the thought of having the motor and trans done at the same time.

We use the Av to haul the boat to the lake a few hours away regularly for camping trips etc. I work a lot of hours at work and spend a lot of time doing restorations on my other cars, not to mention family fun time so I will be having this done to get it back much quicker.

My questions are thoughts on when it is showing time that an engine rebuild would be a good idea and also any simple upgrades like a cam etc. that would be beneficial to tow ability including trans upgrades?

There are many older threads about transmission upgrades and motor rebuilds or replacements. One thing most members mention on transmission improvements is to add a good transmission cooler.
Also many members added a Magnussen supercharger to improve power when towing without sacrificing gas mileage (except when accelerating rapidly) and not hurt the reliability.
