After hitting the beach about 4 out of 5 days while on vacation - I really see the point in these things.

Anyone running any of the following?

Currie Enterprises Tire Deflator This tool is cool, in that it's fast and you can monitor the pressure while you're deflating.

The following are cool because you can install (to deflate) and forget about them. ?They only require an initial setup.

Trailhead Tire Deflators (midway down the page)

Staun Tire Deflators

Looking to get a set / tool soon... any thoughts?!

Marc!

Those are very cool! However, for +/- $50.00, I think I'll stick with a good tire gauge and waste 10 minutes at the trail head.

Money better saved toward my on-board compressor setup in the future ;)

Marc buddy, I am with you - after being on beach 6 out of seven days when in Nantucket recently, with a carload of family waiting for me to air down, these thingies (yes that is a technical term!) look pretty good. The reviews you posted were good and liked the trailhead product, I may be going this way befor emy next week at the beach.

Use cation when airing down on a 17or16in rim. Its very easy to break the bead on the tire. I dont air down my AVY when I go on the beach and I have no problems

Thanks for the heads up...

I aired down to 25psi first time out, and got stuck rather quickly on the first uphill... I usually go down to 15psi and do okay... *knock on wood*

when traveling the national sea shore on Cape Cod you can get a ticket for not dropping your pressure to 11 lbs. the rangers have tire gauges and they do check. the people that try to drive without dropping all the way tear up all of the hills making the sugar like sand very rutty! the auto deflators are great just screw them on and drive the air down to the proper pressure.

11lbs!!!!

you would have to have bead locks for that and I would be surprised how many family off-roaders would bead locks on their vehicles.

you don' drive like a maniac. you also dont want any spin . so it is just a crawl. just have to make sure to air up asap. turning in parking area is a slow process. Where are ya Marc_w? he knows most try to get by with 15 lbs but that wrecks havoc on a couple of the dune hill we have to travel over to get to Race Point

here is what they say about it
http://www.nps.gov/caco/activities/oversand/tips.html
I was wrong they recommend 12 psi

Right here!

Wow, I had no idea they give tickets for too high of a pressure. ?I've seen a few peole out there who look like they didn't air down at all... ?Thanks a lot for the heads up.

Yeah, the 25psi thing was a big mistake. ?For me, as a sand-first timer, 25 looked low enough... ? :-[ It worked great in my Blazer for off-roading. ?(lighter vehicle, same/larger footprint). I found the facts out quickly enough though. ?The hill I got stuck on was going up and over to the SCV area. ?That hill was very very loose and rutted. ?I 'did' fix the very small amount of damage I caused...

15psi works decent for me, with five people and a bunch of gear. ?Here is what it looks like. (ignore my goofball sis, please). ?From the side, you can't really see how the tire is bulged out...

I never have or cause any wheelspin, but now that I think of it, I do have a little trouble pulling out of the tire tracks to let another vehicle pass. ?I'll definitely go lower next time.

vf454, do you run 11 or 12psi? ?15 looked scary for me, so that's why I kind of stuck at the max recommended.

I have only been out there once with the new AV. Then it depends where we are going if you go to mission bell ( take a right at rangers station At Race Point) then 15 to 18 is enough no big hills. But if I go to Towards the Light house on the Race then Its 10- 11. Thanks for being 1 of the few to fix the hills. I carry a rake with me somtimes to rake hills that i saw where bad during the day. Have you ever fished nights. You can travel a couple of other beaches that are closed days, "Like Coast Guard" and "Head of the Meadow" now they take some skill to get out of. " low and slow are the way to go" ?;). It burns my hiney to watch some guy rip the hills up trying to get out with 20 psi. :8: I learned from the locals fishing at night. I had a 2000 Nissan CrewCab And that went fine but the AV is Almost twice the weight. Driving each of them there is like night and day. :cautious:. We will be back out there the week of 11th to 17th.

I'll be sure to take pictures of some of the hills so everyone can see what we are talking about. Probally even get a pic or 2 of some jerk stuck because of wrong air pressure.

I'll try to do the same with the pictures... :)

Cool - I should be down there the 17th through 23rd - Maybe I'll see you around on Saturday!

I've only been a two places - If you come upon the ranger / guard station just before the beach, and take a right into there - that's where I got stuck, that one big uphill dune, with the twisy, off camber turn or steep downhill on the other side. ?I have NO IDEA how they bring dualie campers through there!

We usually head off to the lighthouse, over by the air-station... the pictures in my sig were taken out there. :) ?There's only one tricky setion I can think of... where they have the mirror set up, and they ask you to toot your horn...

I haven't done any night fishing out thre... The last time I did was many years ago with my dad.

I don't know what vehicle we will have out there yet so look for a black nissan crew cab with a TRU sticker in rear window or My SOM.

I am adding these to my Christmas list ;D

I have seen others use them to air down before a trail run. they seem to work very well and will gve you a consistant tire pressure at all four wheels. That is a big bonus in my book. How else would you assure even wear and preformance?

On a side note: I am glad that I did a search on this topic before starting a new post. ;)
