Hopefully one you guys can help me out here. I recently purchased a set of TOG headers (used - off the parts board). They came from Canada and I assumed that that they were legal for California. Got a call from the mechanic this morning telling me that they aren't legel because they don't have the CARB stamp on them.

So I looked at the TOG website and saw that there are two models for the 5.3. The 580022 and 580022C (A.I.R.). I'm thinking that I have the 580022, but should have the other ones. Do you think The Other Guys can convert these so that they are legal? I left a message with the The Other guys, but thought maybe someone here would know.

Thanks...

Nope, Gene is wrong. They need an EO# for CARB. Anyone can convert a header to "fit", such as AIR tubes ect., but come inspection time, they want the EO# (executive order), and the sticker you receive with the header purchase stating the EO#.

Modifying the header will not make it CARB legal. We have adopted these same CARB standards in Oregon.

I believe the TOG's have an EO #. Call them to confirm, if they do they should be able to provide you with another EO sticker.

My point was....if you are trying to modify a header to somehow meet CARB standards, i.e. a (Canadian issued header) and the header (a particular part number) does not have 50 state, and CARB approval, you can't merely modify it to meet the standards, or use the EO# from another part number. Thats all, hope you didn't missunderstand me Gene.

There might still be an issue here.
Togs makes two headers. Calafornia, and everybody else. I went through this when I bought mine from TOGS a few months ago. I don't know if the rules apply to all parts or just new parts.

Gene, pm'd you...

And there does appear to be an issue here. My mechanic just called and said the headers won't work. The header outlet is far below where the catalytic converter inlet is. He is in the process of bringing it back to stock as I write this.

Not sure what I'm going to do at this point. Anyone outside of California (and I guess Oregon) want to buy some headers - cheap?

There are some individuals in this world that are always looking to find creative ways to cut corners or "beat the system. " Muffman and I have a differing view about the performance supremacy of Flowmaster mufflers in the Avalanche application, but his understanding of California Law and the CARB requirements is absolutely correct. The Avalanche owner in the state of California who makes non-CARB approved modifications should understand that he or she is placing themself and the shop that makes such modications at risk of being subject to monetary fines and administrative sanctions. That's just the way it is. And the probably small performance gain in the situation being discussed is not worth that risk. By all means, heed Muffman's warning.

Yep CA takes the smog crap to a whole new level. With the amount of cars we have it is probably a good thing too.

Now my understanding is that he can put those headers on and when he gets the vehicle smogged he will most likely pay a fine for failing the smog check.

CA takes everything to a new and sometimes undesriable level... >:D :E:

The stupid part of it is that the cars are the politically correct target. The two cycle motors and all of the water craft are a much bigger problem. I saw the numbers on this and they are staggering.
I also don't see what MM was doing as trying to 'cut corners'. It was simply a matter of not knowing the particulars. There was nothing nasty or evil in this. TOGS tried to send me Cali pipes. So?

Easy fella's, I'm not trying to cut any corners or add to our already smoggy problem. I thought that the headers I got were correct. On Monday I'll find out if everything is cool or if I need to find a new owner for the headers. These headers have the A.I.R. connection, but they are not stamped with the approved CARB exemption. It might be something TOG can take care of - they are only two hours away.

Also, I don't think the shop that installs this stuff is worried about a fine - they called me to tell that in their opinion the headers were not legal, but they would go ahead and install if I wanted them too. Same thing with the window tint guys - front tint is illegal, but the shops will do it if you want them to.
