Flyn, has your mileage always been like that or did the lift and new tires bring it down?

Steel,

I am not sure what mileage was before because I had the lift and tires installed the first week of ownership. However I do not think my milage is much lower than what was on the sticker. I think my sticker said like 18 highway.

I would assume the Excursion is exempt from posting EPA mileage figures based upon its size, much like HD and Super Duty pickups. The report probably compares vehicles that have posted mileage figures on their window stickers.

I had considered replacing my GMC Yukon with an Escalade until I heard some horror stories about the gas mileage people were getting with the 6 litre. Remind me to kiss my 5.3 litre when I get home tonight. It consistently gives me 17 mpg and I have seen as much as 18.5 mpg!

My best highway mileage so far in the Z71 has been 13.74 mpg. In my 4x2 Excursion (6.8 V-10), I averaged 14.1 City and 16.5 Highway (fully loaded with 8 passengers !!). I'm 2500+ miles into the Av, and very disappointed in the gas mileage. I know that my driving habits make A LOT of difference, but I would think that it would still be better than the Excursion which weighs 3000 pounds more. Anyone have any suggestions to improve the gas mileage (other than slow down !! ;))?

I may be able to stretch my imagination and believe the 3,000 lb weight difference, but surely you jest regarding your mpg's? Are we talking about the same F**d V-10 here? I know people that have that motor in the F250 pickup that are luck to get 10-12 mpg with the wind behind them. I'm not calling you a liar, just suggesting that your experience is probably extraordinary.

RichUF,
I jest with you not... the Excursion 4x2 XLT V-10 has a curb weight of 8800lbs versus my Z71 of 5700 lbs, so the weight difference is tremendous. The mileage (as calculated by hand and by the trip computer --- sometimes those computers tend to calculate numbers that just make the owners feel better) is not exceptional. I admit it, I have a lead foot (15 years of driving ambulances and fire trucks have made me a little aggressive) and I'm sure that has hurt my mileage on both the Excursion and the Avalanche.
In normal city driving, I make a 3 mi round trip drive to work and averaged 14.1 in the Ex, and 13.2 in the Av (that's since May). On the highway the Ex averaged 16.5 with two adults and six kids (and all the gear for a week in the FL Keys), where as the Av with one passenger barely managed 13.7 on a trip of equal distance. I have a friend with a similarly equipped Ex, who gets about the same. Another friend with an F250 4x4 V-10 gets about 11mpg city/14mpg highway.
Now the Ex did give horrible gas mileage for about the first 2000 miles of ownership (I wondered why they put two digits in the trip computer anyway... 8mpg YIKES), but after that it was great (for what it was). I am wondering if the break-in for the Av is similar. I have 2500+ miles, but I'm not getting any better gas mileage.

My Z66?now a collector's item, I'm told ;D?has just under 1,000 miles on it. My average gas mileage from the start has been just over 14 mpg combined city and highway miles (70% city).

David, you sure you don't need some tinkering done under the hood? Under 14 for a highway trip sounds a bit low, even for a Z71. ;)

Many factors go into gas mileage, but all in all, your numbers seem a little low. Long stretches of highway driving seem to net me about 16 MPG at 82 MPH (Nebraska is a long state).

traveling cross country, me in my av, and my dad in his 4wd Durango... my father had to fill up twice as often. Now granted we have larger fuel tanks in our trucks, but when we compared actual mileage, his was a lot worse, for a vehicle that is a lot smaller. He was impressed by our one stop a day ability.

Am I seeing things or was there a Lexus and a Toyota on that list? But I thought they made perfect vehicles..... ;D

BTW, of all the things I love and boast about the Av, mpg is NOT one of them. Then again, I bought it expecting it to get lousy gas mileage so I'm not really disappointed. I'm averaging 14 mpg with about 2/3 city, 1/3 hwy driving, which is about what the 13/17 rating is for the Z-71 4WD model.

Has anybody noticed that gas prices are starting to creep up again.....hopefully the stock market will do the same. ;)

I must be getting lucky... like 20 to 22 mpg lucky! i know that everybody is saying their av only gets 13 or 14mpg... i know it's not the way i drive, cause i drive pretty hard off the line... and getting onto freeways useing those "lets see how fast the can go from 25 to 75 in 100 feet, on ramps" i guess my av likes me. ;D

I wonder how much of that is actually due to the AWD, rather than the 6L? I 've had a 5.7L 3/4 GMC 4x4 with 4.10 gears that got as much as 18mpg on the open road.
