TOP SPEED????

GUEST
Boy did I get a suprise yesturday. ?After some moron was tailgating me on my way to work I figured I would loose him. ?My av got to about 100 mph and thats it. ?Did a litle research and found about the 99 mph speed limiter. ?I am very suprised. The truck was very stable. ?Yea I know not that I do 100 all that often but I dont like the fact that GM and the govt are imposing my top speed. ?Time for the hyperchip upgrade. ?Other than that one wonderful truck!!

Check out another thread on this topic. ?Running at 100+ for any length of time can exceed not only the rated, but also perhaps the actual safety limits of the tires. ?At some point, centrifugal forces will cause the tires to balloon and beyond that perhaps even give out. ?No one's reported that actually happening yet, but if you're the first we'd like to hear about it... given that you survive. ?Either plan on getting better tires or keep a laptop handy so you can report in from the hospital. ? ?:3:

Go for it, dude!! ? ;)

(I predict the last words heard in that truck will be "Here. Hold my beer and watch this!") ? ;D

(Just kidding... no real offense intended!) :-X

If your going to do serious driving at or above 100 you need to get "Z" rated tires, of course they won't hold up the truck, but what the heck. ;D

Related - with the Denali and Escalade having 120 MPH speedo's . . are they governed at a higher point and do they have the tires to take it, or is the speedo just for looks?

Now, I like the Denali cluster in my Av, but the last 20 MPH probably won't ever be exercised!

The Denali comes standard with Michlein P265/70/R17's rated at 106 - they could be upgraded to H @ 112, to fully use the speedo you should run T,U,V,H or Z >:D

Have you wimps never gone over 100 MPH? I remember doing 110 MPH in my '57 chevy PU on Bias ply tires. The rating of tires is not for force but heat. I think you will be OK as long as you don't hold it up there. I've taken every car or truck I have ever owned (my wifes too) over 100 MPH. You sound like a bunch of mothers. People did a lot of fast driving for a lot of years before seat belts, air bags, crumple zones and anti-lock breaks were ever installed on vehicles. And the tires are a lot better now too!

To Guest, yes some of us have driven well above those levels for hours on end. 110 is pretty wimpy from my point of view, I only got tense at 150 - 160 in a '67 GTO, of course that was built a little differently from my 3/4 ton Avalanche, a little more aerodynamic, lower, and lighter.

That said, I wouldn't reccommend anybody trying it. >:D

Well i have to agree with the G-man Gandolph again on this one. I have the michelin cross terrains 265/70/17's off of the denali's and i checked with my tire man who i have known for along time and he runs the drap strip a little with his shop car for their business, Yes if you are just checking your speedlimiter as i did at 128 and then shut it down he said i was ok, but he said driving like that for a couple of miles that the tires heat up fast and then your problems come in,
If you are just trying to get out of the way or blow out the carbon,OK, but not for high speed all the time,,,,,,,spells big trouble
Guest user let me know when you are coming through and i will move over to watch the show.

I think what we are trying to get across here is the risk vs. the gain factor.....ok great....you managed to hit 100+....ok great..congrats.....now you manage to hit 100+...all of a sudden you hear a boom!!...you loose control and god forbid become a permanent part of your local wildlife...or worse....someone else and their family suffer for this.....

If your intent is on going this fast in a truck of this size the least you could do is prepare ahead of time, and make sure you have the right rubber for the job....you wouldn't show up for a hockey came with a baseball bat and glove would you?.. :B:

Big high 5 for NJAV (y)
Unless your going to a fire there's no reason to run that fast that long. I would think that there are enough America's funniest home video......I sorry, I mean Police scariest chases, out there to teach everyone to slow down. Especially in something just a hair smaller than an 18 wheeler

I hit a 100 a couple of times rushing my daughter to the emergency room last week for severe dehydration.

She was blowing chow into a trash can in the AV. I had to do something!

BTW - After a couple of bags of fluids, she's fine!

Man what did I start!! It was not my intention to become public enemy number 1. I have no intention of driving at 100+ for any length of time. I will however install high speed rated tires when these wear out just for piece of mind. I too had to rush my wife to the hospital and I did it at a high rate with my hazards on and not weaving or being reckless. I just dont like the factor that GM is dictating my decision process. No I am not taking the limiter off until I replace the tires and even then I still may not remove it. the Avalanche may feel good at that speed but there are to many other morons on the road to add to the problem with a 6000lb projectile. Everone's input is greately apreciated. I must be getting old. (responsible)

The tires are factory. The limiter is factory. What do you expect GM to do? They have liabilities too. They are not "dictating your decision process." If the tires were capable of higher speed, the limiter would be set accordingly. Contrary to popular belief, big brother is not always looking over our shoulders.

Hey dandan...I'm happy to hear that everything is fine with your daughter....

Let's not get carried away with this....everyone knows there has to be limits set....if not the roadways would be chaotic.... :B:

Ok here is my question. Can anyone tell me where to go to find a certified top speed for my Avalanche. I have the 5300 / Z71 with no modifications (yet ;) ). I know that the top speed I have been able to reach as is, was 97mph before the chip shut me down and brought me back down to 90mph or lower. However at 1:30 am on a clear open stretch of Interstate the very upset trooper insisted that I had somehow developed wings and was doing well over 100+ mph. He had no radar and I saw his closing rate meant that he was a trooper and he wanted me so I stopped immediately. Therein was the problem. He thought that since I was going so fast that I would be a runner and when I stopped before he could reach me, his mobile office went all over the floor :cautious:, whoops. I am now faced with going to court to defend this error :7: and I need to certify that without the aid of hughes aircraft this stock Av will not go over 100+mph. I can use any help I can get be it articles in magazines or whatever. I just don't want to walk into court and call the trooper unenlightened and a liar without some certified facts.

Well - you need to be careful here. You could go to the dealer - but you might get your warranty voided for excessive speed at the same time.

Your approach here might be all wrong any way. I don't think going into court and splitting hairs on 95 versus 105 is going to win the sympathy of the judge.

I would suggest you get your evidence and call the District Attorney's office. Find out who the assistant D.A. is handling your case, calmly and professionally state your case to them over the phone and suggest you're willing to plead guilty to a lesser charge. You've got an 80% chance of getting the lesser charge and a reduced fine right there because it's one less thing the D.A. has to worry about.

I did this on a B.S. ticket I got in Maine last year and got my criminal wreckless charge (ya right - phhhullllleeeeesssseeeeee) reduced to improper passing. In principal I don't even agree with the improper passing charge (I'll argue to this day I did nothing wrong to the letter of Maine State Law) - but $86 and go away without even having to hire a lawyer was a heck of a lot cheaper than the alternatives - even if I took it to court with representation and won. BTW - the lesser charge does not appear on my driving record! >:D >:D >:D

Well that is one thing I am already considering, going to the dealership and getting a letter stating that the top end is under 100+mph. The dealer is a personal friend from back in the motorcycle road racing days and I am sure he won't void my warranty. However I am in IL and there will be no pleading to a lesser charge prior to going to court. The trooper was adamant that I was going WELL in excess of 100mph not merely 105. In this state if the ticket says 100+mph and that can be proven to be mechanically impossible he automatically loses case dismissed. I guess I failed to mention that I am also a law enforcement officer. Not only am I 150% sure I was going under 100mph, but for purposes of my employment I have to have the ticket legally dismissed. Therfore I have to have solid facts to show beyond a doubt that this trooper was mistaken.

You must have really p'd this guy off. Sounds like a ticket war brewing in IL. between the staters and your department. Evidently very little professional courtesy is given in your ?'-20.

I do not know which tires and wheels the specs are based on for the calibration of the speedometer on the AV. But be aware that tire and wheel size can change the speed you are going compared to the speedometer. And at 100mph the difference can be significant. I have never done the math on any given tire size changes, but I know it can throw your speedometer off by quite a bit.

I'm afraid this may turn out to be a lose/lose situation...just don't lose your temper in court.....trust me..... ;) :B:

WOW, "I am 10 7", did you tell the Statey you were a Police Officer? ???

Anyway, in case anyone gets caught with a little more minor infraction, there is a sure fire way to keep points from getting posted on your license:

1) Write the check to the Court for $10 over the amount of the fine.

2) The court will mail you a refund check for your "error."

3) Don't EVER cash that check.

This worked for a friend of mine but he is debating whether to cash his refund check. He got nailed doing 81 in a 55 ($300 fine!). He sent in a check for $310. The Court sent him back a check for $185. He can either cash that check or keep 6 points off his license. 12 points and it gets suspended...

What would you do???

I've heard of that method in the past...but I also heard that is purely serves as a delay rather than a get away....I heard that eventually those points will get added on..... :B:

:-[ Well maybe it depends on the state you reside in :-[

Here in Oregon, the insurance companies can only go back 3 years so this method works here to keep points off...
