LEGITIMATE QUESTION:: There is a TOLL CHARGE (?) for crossing the bridge into the U.S., and back into Canada
HOW is this paid, and is it in U.S. currency/ Canadian currency/ either/ Visa
There are actually three toll bridges we will be crossing: One to get over the border, one at the North end of Grand Island, and one at the South end of Grand Island.
The Rainbow Bridge crosses the border right in the heart of Niagara Falls. It is free to go from Canada to the US, but costs to go from the US to Canada. They will accept US or Canadian cash, and will give change with the appropriate country's currency. It is $2.50 US, or $3.50 Canadian.
There is a toll to cross the bridge onto Grand Island, but no toll to get off of it. I don't know what their policies are about Candian money. More likely than not, if you just give them quarters, they won't care what nationality they are from. If you give them Canadian currency, or loonies or twonies, I don't know if they will discount it, and I don't know if they will give Canadian change.
So the summary is:
- Going to SSBC
- No toll to cross the border
- 75 cents US at North Grand Island Bridge
Returning from SSBC
- 75 cents US at South Grand Island Bridge
- $2.50 US or $3.50 Cdn to cross the Rainbow Bridge at the border
I wish I could tell you more about using Canadian funds at the Grand Island bridge, but unfortunately I have no experience doing that.
Note to people in nieghboring states: if you have a pre-paid electronic toll tag on your vehicle, check with the issuing agency to see if it is honored by the New York State Thruway E-Z Pass system. If it is, you will get a discounted rate ($0.63 for the Grand Island Bridges) and may save you some time. My E-Z Pass tag works in MA, NJ, and PA. So if you have a toll tag from one of those states, it might work here.
