???Does anyone out there know how to answer this question. I have a 2003 AV z-71 1500. I tow a 21ft Malibu Sunsetter VLX with an Extreme tandam Trialer with "Surge" electrical brakes. The Trailer electrical connector is a FLAT 5 which is the same connector Mastercraft uses on it's boat trailer combos. The 03" AV has a round 7 connector on the hitch. I bought a (Round 7 to FLAT 5) adapter from WESBAR model #7257. Will My Av be able to tow my boat (with out) this "prodigy" brake controler I keep reading about on this site.
I used to own a 1995 jeep Grade Cherokee V8 LTD which was able to tow the boat no problem how do you think AV will do?

The surge brakes should not need an external controller.
If you did not need it with your old vehicle you will not need it now.

I think you will really be surprised with your AV when you get to hook your rig up. ;D

All you need to do is trailer the boat the same way you did with your previous vehicle and enjoy.

I have a z71 and tow a Searay Sundancer 258 that is pushing 8000 or so pounds. The Av handles fine towing it. I used to tow it with MY excursion and it was like towing a toy with that. the only thing that I don't like about the z71 is that because of the rear suspension the ride is a bit bouncy with a trailer behind you but if you have a 2500 like orboater has you can tow anything you want and it will be a toy as well because of the difference in the rear suspension.

There is snow on the ground here and my boat is all shrinkwraped stored away.... I wanT WARM WEATHER TO PUT IT IN THE WATER >:D

If your trailer has Surge with Disc brakes the 5th wire [blue] is for Locking out the mastercylinder so you can back up properly
the blue wire ties into your backup lights
If so-- you might want to use a test light to check that the 5 wire is hot, when you put it in reverse

The is a electric operated hydraulic brake actuator but I don't think your trailer would be equipped with it unles it was specially ordered that way

There is also another electricaly operated actuator that has a controller built in, uses the brake light signal
so you don't need one inside

so I guess it depends on what you have

JOE_MAN,

I have pretty much the same trailer that you do, all you need is a round7 to flat 5 connector and you should be taken care of. Plug and Play.........happy boating.

By the way, where in So San Fran do you live, I grew up in Belmont.

:D ;D ;) :) I have a mailbu Respoce LX. Good choice for the water. As for your trailer.....your going to be fine. I worked at a Mailbu dealer for four and half years. Last year....was my last year. I towed every boat, and every trailer that Malibu offers, and had no problems with the set ups. You'll be fine, and enjoy the lakes!!!!

To Lightning or Just Throw It: How much drop in the tongue are you guys using my old hitch tongue is 2 inch. Will that work with my set up with the extreme tandam trailer and my 4x4 Z71 AV (stock height and tires). I keep my boat inside covered storage in Ripon, Ca. so the Av and Malibu VLX/Sunsetter have not officially met. Thanks for your prior comments.

Joe_Man,

I pretty sure that the two inch drop will work just fine. Two inches is all I've ever used. I've probably towed 50 different Malibus with all the different trailors, and I've never encountered a trailor that I could'nt tow with the same hitch, tongue, etc....

Best way to find out.....go hook her up. Happy AV-ing, and have a blast behind the Malibu

JoeMan,

I have a Z71 as well, stock springs, etc... I use a straight connect, see the sig for ride height...perfectly level
