towing goose neck horse trailers

Pegasus- Implicit is that you NEED the 2500 for pulling that much load. They are not made anymore so only a used will do. They are cheap because they are gas guzzlers but rare and only havce the 8.1 liter gas engine. The real deal is to get a used 2500HD Chevy with the Duramax and Allison combo. Same interior as the avalance if you get a crew cab. The sliding hitch is expensive but would solve your issues. I do not think you could tow a 5thy wheel travel trailer though- they are long in the front.

Due to my family purchasing a new big tex goseneck trailer with a goose neck dump trailer on the way. I'm reopening this topic.  My design is different from Jimini's, more along the lines of a hide a goose.  Pics soon to follow.

Here is my gooseneck hitch. I'll get some picks up with the trailer soon

Interesting I bet it pulls better with the weight over the axle versus hanging off the back of the frame.

I haven't  pulled it with any load on the trailer but it pulls like a dream empty.

Yes it is a underbed hitch. Bolted directly to the frame nothing is attached to the bed.

Tried it out with the tractor yesterday. Pulled wonderfully.

Slick!!!  Pull the ball, put the rubber mat down and you'd never know it was there.  (y) (y)

The owners manual states in it 'Do NOT use with Goose neck or 5th wheel'. It is not safe to be used with these trucks.
If GM is saying don't do it and you do it anyways, you better never have an accident with it as you could become liable for damages and your insurance company could use the fact GM lists it in the user manual not to do a 5th wheel as a reason to NOT pay. Ie you are using the vehicle to tow in a manner the manufacturer says not to.

Better off adding one of these to your truck then you are safe and legal. They are a little pricey though.
This is the route I plan to take with my 2500. These also may allow you to tow a little more than the rated weight. Some where on their site it said something that leads me to believe that you could pull 13500 lbs legally with the 2500 with it. I can't say where I saw the information but you could certainly call them and find out.
