Tranny Problem

Just bought a new Z-71 a week ago. After driving it to work the next day, I noticed that it downshifted very hard from 3-2 when coming to a stop. Brought it back to the dealer and haven't gotten it back yet. They replaced a few parts, but have been unable to fix the problem. As of Friday, after a week of trying fixes, they said they are going to replace the tranny, but they need GM's concurrence. Has anyone else had this type of problem? Is there any recourse I have with GM? I have spoken to GM but they maintain they are going to make the repairs under warranty, that is what they are obligated to do, nothing else.

I don't have this problem with my AV but, I did have a trans problem with another GM I owned. It was a manual trans and when you shifted from 1st to 2nd, it would miss the gate and go directly into 4th... I took it to the dealer and they believed that it was a problem. They ordered syncro parts first, just to rip apart my car and discover they ordered the wrong parts. Once they found out that it was probably going to be quicker to get a whole new trans, they replaced mine. After it was replaced, it still had the same problem. After some complaining, they took my original suggestion and adjusted the stickshift linkage...problem solved. I know this is not the same issue but it was with GM and a warranty issue. Moral, stick with it. If you think it's wrong, it probably is. If your feel your getting the run arround, complain, but don't be a looser about it. Because of the extra trips I had to make to get service, I got a free loaner out of them while they were doing the final work. Do your part of the process and let them know about it to make sure they take care of you and do their part.

My prob is shifting from 1-2 very hard. It took them 2 weeks to get a new valve body in, but today I'm taking it in this morning for a half days work in getting it fixed. I'll report back this afternoon and tell you the out come. They WILL get it right, because I'm going on vacation on wednesday!!!

Hi,

I have had mine in twice for clunking noise and hard shifting . There are two service bulletins # 99-04-20-002A and 01-07-30-031. They told me there is nothing they can do, that this is normal. I think it sucks for a 30K truck to have these type of shifting problems.

Good news and bad news. Good news is they got the tranny apart and looked at it to put in the new valve body. BAD news, to many shavings for a valve body replacement. They're going to replace the whole thing. REALLY BAD news, today is monday, won't have the tranny till tuesday morning and I go on vacation wednesday morning. Chevy better get it in gear and get it fixed, becasue I know a lot of people that won't be happy if they don't, starting with me. This is my once a year trek home to see the parents

Tell them your situation, and that they can FIX it, or give you a loaner AV....better to put miles on THEIR AV than yours...

Sorry to hear about the troubles..hope it all works out. Let us all know!

Got it back today and I must say, I sure can tell a difference. No more whiplash. Shifts like it should. Took it in on Monday morning and they had the new tranny ordered and in by the end of work on Tuesday. Now for the big test, 6,000 miles in the next two weeks. Cross your fingers everybody.

My Av has a slight "clunk" that occurs only when accelerating slowly from a stop. Happens between 2-3 gears and is mildly annoying. ??? If I accelerate at a brisk pace the shifts are crisp, quick and quiet. Downshifts from 3-2 and 2-1 do seem to be more noticeable than they should. I may have it looked at next time I'm at the dealer but in my case I don't think it's anything to be particularly alarmed about. More irritating than anything else.

I had the same problem when driving 0 to 15mph with the noise. this started while on Vac. in FL form OH. While in FL I took it to a chevy dealer and they found that the front diff. was bad. Service manager said it was a manf defect. They had to order a new one from chevy in Detroit. We had to extend our Vac :-[ , however the part never made it. Cust Service was of NO help other than to make sure I had the roadside assistance #. Nice what 40K will get you. We made it home and it went back to the dealer on the 10th and I still don't have it back.

Maybe not related, has anyone noticed what feels like slop in the driveline from deceleration to acceleration at about 5-10 mph? Only happens at slow speed, doesn't do it any other time. Feels like something in driveline is loose. I have not taken it to the dealer due to the fact it is kinda hard to duplicate.

Any suggestions? I have about 1200 miles on my AV now and don't want to look like a complete fool going to GM if it is normal. Thanks.

Hey Rescue_1,

Mine does it too. I have heard others here complain about it. I spoke to a dealer and they said that it is a normal occurence.

Well, that little love note from GM perfectly describes the clunk I am experiencing. They call it normal, I call it irritating. I can live with it but I'd rather not. If I had bought a Dodge I would have expected this but not from Chevy.

I was all set to bring my 2001 Tahoe LT in for that occasional clunk from 1-2 gear at slow speeds. Then I noticed the same noise in my new AV. You know if it happens in both vehicles, the dealer is just going to say it's normal. I'm disappointed, but not suprised. The service at my Chevy dealer is getting as bad as Ford. I can't believe I said that. :cautious:

my tranny sometimes shudders when shifting from 1st to second, not always. it only does when applying moderate acceleration :( I also have the clunking sound on the 2 to 3 shift. I will check with the gm service department soon.

had the goodwrench guy drive my av today and he confirmed their was a shudder when shifting from 1st to second.

Now here is where it gets interesting. The goodwrench guy says he is aware of the problem and he knows of one other av with the same problem. he gets the vin and is sending a report to gm. Says there is no tsb on the problem yet so he doesn't know what to do to fix it.

he took my name and number and said he would call me when he has some answers.

My Av now has about 2,600 miles on it...over the past 4 - 500 miles the following problems have shown up, interestingly all only happen *sometimes*. ???

Reverse out of garage (level ground), shift to D...1 to 2 second pause before engaging completely.

Travel in traffic 20 - 30 mph...stop at light...go to pull away on light throttle and tranny feels as though it's still in 2 or 3 for a second or two...then shifts down into 1 and pulls away.

Slow speed merge onto hwy (10 - 15 mph), medium gas to merge...feels as though tranny is still in 3, won't downshift into 2...all I can do is floor it and then it will downshift into 1... 2 seems to go on vacation!!

1 to 2 shifts on light throttle very hesitant...feels like a definite "slip"???

I have an appt at my dealer for next Monday...I'll post a follow-up.

Mike

:B:New to club. My first post. w00t!
Any way, I had to have THE WHOLE TRANNY replaced at 150 miles. No explanation and Chevy fought me tooth and nail. But I got reimbursed for month. Now at 3500 and no probs (except that lurch)

Wetworks...sorry to hear that Chevy kind of wasn't on the same sheet of music you were...but I'm glad to hear all worked out for you.....hopefully this will be your last run in with any major probs.....

BTW...welcome aboard....

has any one has a problem when the converter locking up at 40 mph the trany shudders if you maintan that speed

This sounds like a problem that is more related to the 1500 model. Has anyone had trouble with the 2500's tranny yet? They are different I think...

I don't think it is a 60/85 issue, I would visit my service guy fairly quickly, doesn't sound right to me.
