Tranny trouble!

We drove down to Salem today in Mrs Danlwils truck. It's a 50 mile trip each way on the Interstate. On the way back I noticed the transmission slipping at freeway speeds... pretty bad. Would jump from 2500 to 3000 rpms with light pressure without any acceleration.

When I came to a complete stop and ran it through the gears... it would shift ok through 1st and 2nd then hesitate and plunge into 3rd.

When I got home... I checked the fluid and it is about a pint low.... but smells BADLY BURNT!. :E: :E: :E:.... Bummer Tranny time :6:

BTW it has 3200 miles on it. virtually a brand new truck :cautious:

We got our truck back.

The torque coverter failed and scattered brass throughout the transmission taking 3rd gear out. They replaced the torque converter and clutch packs.

Our dealer had it up and running within 3 days. It feels as good as new and we are very pleased! ;D

They gave us a fully loaded 04 Tahoe as a loaner. It was a nice ride but could you ever feel the difference in the steering response due to the shorter wheel base.

Anyway.. THANKS RUSS CHEVROLET FOR ANOTHER GREAT EXPERIENCE THROUGH A POTENTIALLY DIFFICULT SITUATION.

We give you :B: :B: :B: :B: :B: and a little

sounds like what happened to my '02. they replace the whole tranny, as well as the torque converter. did they flush your tranny cooler too?

My '04 with almost 12,0000 miles (yeah, I have a bit of a commute) started slipping yesterday. I had driven all the way from home to Fredericksburg (40 miles) and when I pulled away from a light as the truck shifted into 2nd, it felt like I had knocked it into neutral. I had three more stoplights until I got to the office and it did it each time. Letting off the gas caused it to hook up.

After getting a few things squared away at work, I drove it down to the dealer. I didn't slip again. They couldn't work on it until Tuesday and wanted me to keep driving it. When I asked who to call when I got t-boned at an intersection, they decided to get me a rental.

Enterprise asked me what I was driving and said they had a DGM Z71 Silverado, which surprised me. I was expectimg to be drivimg a Neon for the weekend:)

On driving the Silverado, I am longing to get my Avalanch back. There is no comparing the ride and handling between the two. The P/U is OK, but minor bumps in the road are directly transmitted to my backbone.

Anyway, has anyone had this trouble with an GM transmission? I'm expecting the dealer to give me the old "we couldn't duplicate it" when I go back next week.

Mudbone,

Sounds like a similar situation to what we had.

I would encourage you to call them EVERYDAY! Ask a billion questions.

I was told by my service writer that they've had problems with the sunshell. In my situation the torque converter failed and put metal shavings throughout the tranny and plugged it up. I believe that if there is any metal in the transmission they'll rebuild it.

Hope your dealer is a good one. Good luck.

BTW.... I agree... Even the 04 Tahoe plays second fiddle to the AV. Nice ride but we were anxious to get our own truck back...
um um um

sigh.. today I was stopped at a corner for a red light.. then i started to proceed right and heard a big clunk. not sure what it was, I thought it was a pothole and water drain grid I hit....

but at about 40 mph, I noticed that basically, it felt like I was in neutral.. a light tap on the gas and the revs go up without accelerating. ARGH! I shifted to neutral and back in drive and everything seems to be fine..................

I hope I'm not going ot be posting back soon to say I need a tranny rebuild..

this is on a '04 Av 1500.. about 2000 miles!!!!

hope things go well for you... I'm curious what broke ???

just goes to say that things break.... go figure

I had the same thing happen to me. At 1,028 miles I was making a right hand turn and accelerating up to 40 MPH and a shift from 2 to 3rd gear something happened. During the shift the engine revved up to 5,000rpm but it did not accelerate! When I realized I was applying the gas but not moving. I backed up off the gas, and it slid into 3rd gear around 1,800rpm. I called OnStar immediately after it happened they said they saw no trouble. I took it to the dealership they put 40 miles on it said they couldn't duplicate it. Blah Blah Blah. Since then it has NEVER happened again!

However I noticed something on my own... When you shift from park to Drive you can push the gearshift lever forward (toward the firewall) and it is still in drive. If you nudge it ever so slightly the tranny will shift into Neutral but indicate Drive. It doesn't take much of a bump as you make a turn to push the gearshift forward to cause this to occur.

There you have it... My $.02
