I'm new to owning a new vehicle period lol.  I can't figure out what the inner front signal lights do on the avalanche?  They don't seem to be signal lights, not hazards, the outer ones flash when I turn my hazards on, they just don't light up no matter what switch I flip or turn.  Can anybody tell me why they are there?

Also, is the mpg on the info display in U.S gallons?

First welcome to the website!
I am guessing that the two "signal lights" you are asking about are the daytime running lights. They come on when the vehicle is in gear and it is light enough to trigger the light sensor in the top of the dashboard. Best way to test them is to park in front of a glass storefront, put you foot on the brake and put in drive during the day. They should come on. If it is dark out the headlights should come on and the dashboard and center console lights inside will be dim.
If you didn't get an owner's manual check the resources section on this website for a PDF format manual of whatever year and model AV you have.
The display on dash should be in U.S. mileage unless that AV was changed for Canadian or other country usage.
FYI many members put that info in their signature section so they don't have to repeat themselves when asking questions since some mods or fixes are year or model specific.
Hope you have many happy miles on your AV.

Ahhh that explains why I couldn't see them lit.  Thanks.

I'll figure out if it was changed to Canadian.  Getting about 15.5mpg.  I had heard they should be around 18mpg.  Do the math, if it's in US gallons then that puts me right around 18mpg.  Hopefully that's the case.

I'll check out the PDF thank you.

The AV is very much influenced by driver input to throttle and brakes. Your mileage will vary depending on things like how hard you drive it, how fast you cruise, tire size and inflation, how much stop and go driving as well as idling. Then maintenance things can affect mileage too such as clean injectors, good wires etc.
I see you have a 2005 AV so one thing to check is your gear ratio since it may be low for towing and not good gas mileage, second generation from 2009 and newer has higher gear ratios to improve gas mileage but at the sacrifice of towing and hauling.....
In general the AV is a 6,000 lb + vehicle with the aerodynamics of a brick and is never a great economy vehicle. You will find many older threads about gas mileage on this site and they usually are revived when gas prices go up.
Best way to improve MPG is to drive it like an old man or lady.....light use on the pedals.

On my 2003, when it's dark out and I unlock the dors with the remote, the daytime running lights, rear lights and puddle lights come on to light the area around the truck.

I get about 12mpg US. But I have about 300lbs of tire & wheel, a lift kit, and a lead foot.
