VanDevere Shipping Charges. Watch Out

First, let me say that I have done some fairly good business with Dal and VanDevere.

Good value, reasonably quick getting the stuff to you and friendly.

However, about 3 months or so ago I decided I wanted the front brush guard. Van Devere had a good price compared to the others.

I called Dal, got his price on the guard and discussed shipping. He said he would have to check with their favorite company and he would call back. They had never shipped one before.

A day or so later he called, quoted $65 for shipping delivered to my door. Sounded good and I paid by credit card for the entire cost.

The guard was delivered. The box was kind of ragged as someone at VanDevere had cut the shipping bands, put my other items in there and taped the box shut. Not fiber tape but regular packing tape. The box had opened in transit and it had been rained on. There were also 3 large holes in the box. :6:

Luckily for me, my wife was smart. She opened the box, checked the guard and made sure all of the extra items were in there. She was also smart enough to document the condition of the box on the shipping manifest and had the driver sign it. >:D

Dal also got a call about that.

Today, I get the mail and I notice something from VanDevere that looks like an invoice. Sure enough it was an invoice for an additional $30 for "home delivery". In addition, they had looked up my credit card number, charged the $30, and someone (female)wrote "per telephone conversation". :8:

Yea, right! I never had a conversation authorizing additional shipping charges.

Now, I haven't called Dal yet, that is something I will do tomorrow morning. I will let you know how that goes.

Be aware.

Call your credit card company and refuse the charges. They will take care of it.
Then give Dal an earful.

RedAV, this seems like some type of miscommunication. Perhaps the invoice was meant to be billed to another customer :cautious:

Had a very, very similar experience myself about a tear ago with a freight company. I called the freight company and explained to them why I wouldn't pay the extra bill and then called my credit card company to refuse the charges. The credit card company credited my account and contacted the freight company and took care of it. Just make sure you contact them first to tell them why you will not pay for the extra charge and they may be able to work with you with getting the credit card company involved. Good luck.

Sorry....but there's something that I don't understand??? The possibility plainly exists that this may have been a simple mistake...so why "slam" these guys publicly before you've even called Dal???

Surely it's only fair to confirm the facts first?

As to "holes in the box" and "rain"....surely you should be getting on the shipper's back over that???

Mike, I don't understand you on this. In my opinion I didn't "slam" VanDevere. In fact I stated I had some good business with them.

The facts are not in dispute. I agreed to a certain amount for shipping and later I received an additional invoice from VanDevere for additional money.

They may retract the invoice for additional money but they did invoice me for it 3 months later.

I might have understood the claim "We forgot, there was additional fees for home delivery." I have no desire to put them out of business as they have excellent prices and know they work on very short margins.

However, they (probably not Dal) had the gall to get my credit card number and give themselves additional money.

If they would have called and asked first, we would have talked about it and I probably would have authorized the additional $30.

It was more than that Mike. They selected the freight line. This was their best shipper. I didn't say "give me the cheapest."

Part of the comments were on their shipping preparation. They took something as heavy as the guard, cut the shipping bands, and then taped it up with regular packing tape.

Yea, the shipper got their piece over that but VanDevere owns some of it also.

Like I said, I have done business 3 times with Dal and probably will again. However, after this I will be more on guard.

RedAv.....here's where I eat humble pie :-[ :-[

I had missed this crucial part...

"Yea, right! I never had a conversation authorizing additional shipping charges. "

I surely understand now why you are a bit :8:

Let us know what Dal says please...
