Voiding Factory Warranty

Edward,,,

Stick with the facts that we can backup bro... ?

Facts? ... I don't have documented or recorded audio fact, just direct heresay that I believe to be pretty reliable...

I feel that this is an extreme rare case scenario, but is worth mention nonetheless... Some folks who mod their vehicles with permanent modifications to the driveline and these mods are questionably putting various component warranties at risk, may be ok in the now with their dealership, and get good service... But there are recent things I have "heard" that makes it a less safe avenue... (I mentioned details above to show the state of the situation...) ... So, in short, what may be ok and covered today, may not be covered or ok next year, due to the state of things...

Maybe this is only in my locale, and special to my ears or something... If I offended someone, I truly apologize... I just don't want people here to mod, and blindly walk into the dookie... This forum provides a service to av owners, and I am just providing a scenario to introduce to their thought process when they consider warranty coverage vs. mod ...

Folks, this position I take is highly opinionated and subjective... I mod my vehicle, and a few things are probably questionable with some delers and not with others... Personally I am not comfy with say a Granatelli MAF as a mod, but to each their own... I just want to be as detailed and informative as possible in this instance of a rare "what if" , and that Magnuson/Moss is not an invisible force field around your av that cannot be penetrated... So, my ramblings here are showing a possible case scenario where your defenses may become insolvent if pushed ... That's all ...

I, for one, appreciate any and all information I can get regarding warranty issues. Whether that information has a positive or negative slant on it does not matter, as long as it is informative, and hopefully useful. I would think that most Avalanche owners would feel the same way. I don't know about most folks, but I can usually tell the difference between subjective opinion and fact. In any event, I appreciate the pragmatic approach to informing fellow members of potential issues.

I think your opinion was presented properly. I read the post, and didn't think it was anything out of line.

I agree with davidw55 - I reread your post and thought that you made it clear that it was something you heard versus fact.

Keep the info coming,

Joe

11H - you're right on. Mods are the perfect example of caveat emptor, and as you said, the more invasive the mod, the more risk the owner runs of having to fight with a dealer about warranty claims. Take it from me -- the voice of experience. I had so much trouble with GM over the little mods I made to my '01 Denali that I hesitated to even tint the windows on my Av. When my truck (the Denali) wouldn't start, it was the fault of my alarm system...and/or the navigation system and tv. When my engine swallowed water it was because of the K&N filter. When my catalytic converter broke up at 15k miles it was because of the catback exhaust. Oh, and per the regional service manager covering TN, MS, etc., the little "tornado air" add-on inserted into my air intake tube (between the MAF and the TB) was enough in and of itself for him to deny any and all warranty claims I made on that vehicle. Now, you, I, and the majority of those reading this know that's BS under the aforementioned court ruling, but without the headaches associated with legal proceedings (including arbitration) and shelling out the greenbacks to get your car out the service department's hock on the front end, that means little in the real world.

Don't misunderstand me, folks - I am a mod'er until the day I die. But I'm a little skiddish now. No more electronic mods for me (i.e., aftermarket MAF, chips, etc.) unless they come from the dealer or can be completely removed before bringing the truck in for service.

I don't want to have to buy another engine. (like last time)

This is very good information so owners can ask every once in a while to verify the history of their vehicle with the dealership. They can pull up the history. I once had an Isuzu p/u that carfax cautioned the odometer may have been rolled back. As the owner since new, I checked the emissions records, and found that some monkey entered 72,000 miles instead of 22,000 miles. At the age of the vehicle it would have been physically impossible for that mileage. So, with the below information, whether true or not, we should check our vehicles history every so often. It does sound like something that can happen very easily. We all have heard of identity theft, our vehicles vin number is the same and can be fraudulently used. It is up to us to be aware of this. Don't you inquire from a dealer what kind of warranty work a vehicle has had done on it when you purchase a used vehicle? I know I have declined to purchase a vehicle based on its warranty history. What does a lemon have,..... a long warranty history....

Another thing that has been happening recently... Some dealerships have had problems with service writers writing up girlfriends, and families repairs on other customer's VIN as they are out of warranty... Joe Smith may have never had his tranny replaced, but he did according to the fraud commiting writer across the country... 11H

11H - Thar's a hell of a thing to post. ?I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it really has no place in this thread. ?You are speaking to a large audience with every post you make and while most are very informative, the merit of this comment in this post I question. ?Stick with the facts that we can backup bro... ? >:D
