Volant with Velocity Stack (Venturi)

For various reasons, I have decided that I would like the Volant system for my 8.1L. One of the issues that has been brought up, very logically explained by Gandolphxx, among others, is the slight loss of intake vacuum, ie intake velocity at throttle tip-in with the addition of most aftermarket intake kits. I was wondering if running the cheap little velocity stack venturi that everyone was throwing in would alleviate this slight low end response issue. So has anyone run this setup, and does my reasoning hold any water? You would get the larger flow area, but the venturi may maintain or improve the intake velocity, which is half the equation. Flow rate = air volume x velocity. Thanks guys!!

I had the velocity stack in, couldn't tell any difference. It appears to have actually hurt my gas mileage, though I have the 5.3, not the 8.1. I have the drop-in K&N, couldn't tell that the velocity stack made any difference at all. I pulled it out and am currently running without it, doing some more measuring of gas mileage for comparison purposes.

MyBigToy, your drop in gas mileage may not be from the volocity stack. I put in a K&N Drop in filter also and lost about one to two miles per gallon. Anyone else have that happen them?

I've had the K&N in since the truck was only a month old, so I can't say if it decreased or increased gas mileage.

My prior experiences would suggest I should get an increase, based on using a K&N drop-in in three previous vehicles (2000 Explorer with 4.0 SOHC, 94 Sonoma with 4.3 Vortec, 89 Mustang LX 5.0).

One of the problems with the loss of MPG may be that you know it is in there and are trying to feel a difference. Thus pushing the GO control just a little faster and harder then normal. This is the problem I am facing since my "Tru-Dual" FM 40's W/ X pipe and K&N FIPK mods. If I could ever just let my wife Carrie drive it for about a week, I might see an increase. It is hard to part with her for that long......My AV
I love to hear her ROAR!!!!...........my AV >:D

Just a thought!

I think the Volant and the Procold are both good
intakes. Though since I put a Procold on my fiances
truck I am starting to rethink the volant....

I don't like the VR stack personally. If you want I
would suggest for you to it wait for it to be
on special at Tbyrne. He just thru it in when I bought
my volant from him. Anyway it saves money and if you
don't like it you didn't pay the 50 bucks for it.

I had a VR stack I put it in my AV (5.3L) and I noticed
a change but it was a change for the worse. It was
really having trouble after I put it on in the low end.
I Took apart my intake and there was the problem
the little VR stack had dislodged itself from the throttle
body and wedged itself into the main part of the intake
thus blocking off a large part of the air current. :7:

I would strongly recommend against the VR stack for this
reason. But if you want it I would suggest doing it right
when you put the volant on. As its a PitA to get the volant
off.

Remember whatever you do to Disco the battery (neg cable)
for this when you install.

Aetatis.

Here are some reviews that have been posted on various boards recently -

Here is something that was posted on one of the truck boards recently. I know, it's gas mileage related but this is his feedback -

okay, just to give you an update on what this thing actually does... all i really got out of it was 1.5MPG which is good enough for me.

4 weeks of running, .8 MPG solidly. Could never get over 20.8ish, now 21 with room to spare. You wont notice the Vararam on WOT bursts, where it really shows a presence is holding speed and or light tipins of the throttle. Lot less pedal effort in both cases.

I've been through about 5-6 tanks with the VR Stack and have seen a solid .75-.85 gain in mileage. One tank had a 1.2MPG increase but that was with alot of highway driving. This truck also has a Volant induction.

I also don't recommend the velocity stack (Vararam). I agree...it is too easy for it to fall back into the intake tube. I also had a problem with carbon buildup between the butterfly and the stack..don't know exactly why, but i no longer have the problem after taking the stack out.

I'd say my decision has been made. I think the Volant intake will do just fine by itself. Thanks for all the input guys, you just can't argue with demonstrated real word performance.
