What a great club!!!  We have fallen in love with an 04 Avalanche 1500 4WD
but have never owned a truck.  We now have a Ford Escape and just bought an 18ft rv hybrid and finding it just too much to tow (especially since we are driving through the Rockies this summer!!!).
Everyone we talk to says great truck BUT very hard on gas.  This is worrying us.  Can you tell me what to expect with an 04?  please compare to fuel economy to other GM SUV's such as the Envoy/Yukon/Suburban.  Any advise (reassurance) would be greatly appreciated.

Oh this Avalanche has 23,000 miles and they are asking $24,000 (I think this is good - we are in Canada so I am sure deals are much better in the US)

Gas mileage is the same as other fullsize GM truck, but no where near a Escape, you'll love the AV

BTW :welcome: to the club

welcome to the club Allison
the av makes a great tow vehicle
hard to say what you'll get towing through the mountains, but I'd guess 10-12mpg, should be about the same as the other vehicles mentioned
how much does your trailer weigh?

Thanks for the quick responses MichiganSilver and Wildfire, feeling better already.

Our trailer is light (had to choose small because towing with Escape)

GVW - 2766
GVWR - 3700
Still figuring out what these terms mean????

Yeah the gas mileage isn't great, about what's been mentioned above, but what you gain in versatility and power will more than make up for the difference.

lower MPG is just one of the drawbacks of buying a full size truck.  I understand what you're going through.  I traded a Hyundai Accent fo my Av.  I get less than 1/2 the mpg than I did in the Accent.

Instead of focusing on the negative aspects of buying, consider the positives... more room, comfort, SAFETY and most important...  the cool factor of owning one.

Great points

I had a Escape before the AVA, Once I drove the AVA, I knew I had to have one and have no regrets for buying the AVA. Like what was said, what you lose in fuel mileage you make up in everything else.

I believe you'll find that you'll average 14 to 16 mpg for basic day to day driving... It seems that there is some variance to what folks get.. depending on terrair, road conditions and driving habits... but overall, that seems to be the BASIC average. For a big 7000 lbs truck, that's not bad...

I believe that you'll love the truck and have a great experience with it... sounds to me like a reasonable price too

Good luck and enjoy that trip to the Rockies  ;D ;D

GVWR = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

which is what the vehicle can move... and includes vehicle weight, cargo and tow.

check towing section for more info
