THIS IS KIND OF WHAT I HAVE IN MIND. GIVE ME SOME IDEAS OF TIMES AND ACTIVITIES EACH OF YOU HAVE IN MIND SO I CAN ADD THEM TO THE LIST. NOT ALL OF US WILL WANT TO DO THE SAME THINGS, BUT WE CAN GET SOME IDEAS TOGETHER TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF THIS TRIP.

I'll be flying back from Atlanta on the 10th... I was thinking about flying out of Onterio, and just taking off for Vegas on Friday. If this works out for me, I'll probably be able to meet you guys for breakfast.

DON'T BE AFFRAID THIS IS JUST MY ITINARARY, I ENJOY DRIVING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT WITH LESS TRAFFIC, AND GETTING TO MY DESTINATION EARLY ENOUGH TO ENJOY THE FIRST DAY. NOBODY HAS TO GO ON MY TIME SCHEDULE, WE WILL HOOK UP IN ZION OR THE HOTEL.

Gonna leave us all in the dust huh? ??? ;) I know you love driving in the wee hours of the night.

OK, I am a bit of a whimp but 6:00 AM starts are a bit early for me. I would perfer starting each day at 8:00 or 9:00 AM. I don't think the sun will even be up at 6:00 that late in October. I hope I'm not whining, I'm just not much of a morning person. :)

I hope to have more time to dedicate to the planning, this week.

I am going to try to have two itineraries for each day. Both going to the same park, just different options when we get there. They may also have different start and end times. Many of the hikes CAHIKR is going to do, will require an early start to get them done. Plus the fact that he can not sleep more than a couple hours at a time. :)

I would like to see easy & moderate/strenuous paths. That way we all enjoy at our different paces.

I just noticed that the meet is listed for the 11th to the 15th but the rooms are booked for the 16th. Is the morning of the 16th checkout day or are we planning activites for that day? I am not planning to do the Moab option so I am wondering if the 16th is a Zion/Bryce day or a travel day?

Thanks

We are going to look for a good fire road to run down. What route are you driving? HQ is going Sat to Tues also. On tues night, he is going to stay in Vegas. You two might be able to caravan? Are you ready to take a room for the trip? I still have some available and an anxious to get them reserved? No pressure, just let us know when you can.

The plan is to check out the 16th. But it is all still open for changes by the will of the members. Some talk has been to checkout the 15th and head to Moab for those going and head home or to the grand canyon, for those not going to moab.

I think we are just trying to play it a little loose, to accomodate the needs of all the members. Some leave tuesday, some go to moab, some go home. Everybody will have a slightly different plan, but the majority of the activities for Sunday, Monday & Tuesday are going to be planned.

That sounds good. We are trying to firm up some plans for the trip up and back. Just made reservations for tuesday nite in Vegas $30 at Terribles Hotel - it's really not bad - stayed there before - off the strip - not too crowded.

We plan to leave Utah on Tuesday am, head to the Grand Canyon and return via Vegas with an overnight stay there. It's too long of a drive back to L.A.

I would like to start planning the Saturday segment of the trip. I figured if we make it into Vegas around noon and spend some time there for lunch/brunch/buffet, we may be able to have some Vegas / Arizona Avalanches follow us up to Utah or if there are some Avalanches the just want to join us to Vegas, that will be fine as well.

I think it would be fine if for people to join up for even a small portion of the trip.

Example:

So Cal to Vegas on Saturday Morning

Vegas to Utah on Saturday Afternoon / Evening

Vegas to Utah on Sunday (Easy Day trip for Vegas folks)

Spend Saturday in Vegas and drive up to Utah on Sunday (great option for So Cal folks)

Spend Sat, Sun, in Vegas and drive up to Utah on Monday

Sat in Vegas, Sunday in Utah, Monday in Vegas

... the possibilities are endless ;D

Since we are looking at the possibillity getting one of the larger lodge room, there will be some flexibility in accomodating other people with different schedules. If people wanted to just spend 1 or 2 nights, it would be possible to that without having to get a 3 or 5 day committment.

Well, today is the last day I can keep the remaining rooms in my name. I am going to cancel them tonight. If you email or PM before then, I will transfer it into your name. If you decide you want to come later, we still have plenty of room. We will also be able to reserve these rooms again, if they are still available.

On another subject, we did keep the 4 bedroom cabin/home (aka. Family Suite). 2 bedrooms are currently being used, but 2 are still available. This is the ideal room for you, if you really want to come, but budget is a problem. Since the room is already paid in full, these rooms can be used by anyone who needs them. If this trip is something you really wanted, but could not afford, this might help. Your only lodging cost is what you can afford. Can you afford $25/night, then the room is yours. If you can afford $10/night, then the room is yours. Get my drift? Stay in the room and pay what you can. Just come to the meet and have a good time. Only two of these rooms available, so sign-up soon.

PM me for details.

I think we should move some of this info back to the main board. I am afraid some people may have written off this event because:

It is too many days
It is too expensive
They feel they have to do the entire trip
They cannot commit to x days
They don't know what their schedule is going to be
They may have to decide at the last minute
They don't have the money now but maybe later

It seems a lot of people just show up at our meets - we should let everyone feel that they are welcom to attend this event, even if it is to join us for a small segment of the trip. I know there are plenty of folks out there in CA, NV, AZ, and UT that might be interested in parts of this trip but don't want to speak up or commit to anything for any of the above reasons.

I don't know if you noticed, but the banner for the meet is now diplayed on the front page. That should help give some extra last minute exposure. (y)

I am going to sketch out a travel plan for Saturday.

Based upon a couple of map programs, the estimate from Vegas to our hotel in Utah is about 220 miles and 4.5 hours I would like to allow at least one stop around the midway point in St George Utah.

With that in mind, a departure from Vegas around 12:30 - 1:30 would be just about ideal.

This will allow about an hour for lunch and travel time for people comming from Southern Califronia, Central California and Arizona.

I wanted to pick a meeting spot in Las Vegas so I am open to ideas. One location I liked is the Orleans Hotel. It is off the strip on Tropicana Blvd (first exit when entering the Las Vegas strip) They have a large outdoor parking lot and one of the best buffets in town.

If there are Vegas folks please chime in. We need a spot not too far off the freeway with plenty of parking, decent food, good visibility, and something to keep us occupied for about an hour or so.

I would personally like to avoind going into Vegas is possible. I need to find rest stops that are suitable to stretch both my legs, and Mooses. I don't want to inconvenience the group, so I don't mind going off and finding my own rest area near where the group stops. But, I am not sure I am going to find one in Vegas.

I suspect our stops will be based upon who is comming up when. The So Cal group will probably meet at the McDonalds in San Bernardino to start the cruise. I know of a couple of other stops along the way that are nice (Flying J truck stop of Lenwood Road, before entering Barstow) and the Nevada Visitor Information Center before entering Vegas.

The Central Cal group will probably link up to I 15 past barstow and head in to Vegas as well. I don't know if there will be any Vegas or AZ folks joining us but somewhere in Vegas would be a good stop.
I would definitely avoid the strip but would like to pick a location where it would be easy to spot us and not too far off the interstate.

I'm driving up to Vegas tomorrow. I'll keep an eye out for a rest stop of some sort that can accomidate us (includung Moose). I know that there's a casino just before entering Vegas, and right across the street is a truck stop (don't remember the names of either).

I'll be sure to look. Also there's Mesquit(sp?) right on the border of Utah and Nevada on the 15. There's casinos, and rest stops there also. They may be more dog friendly since they are smaller than Vegas.

Primm/Whiskey Pete is right on the border of NV and CA with plenty of space and parking. It is also very visible and right off the interstate. My only concern with that location is for Arizona and Vegas travelers. They will have to backtrack (drive south) about 30-45 miles to meet us there. It is a nice stop nonetheless and would work just as well. The Nevada Visitor information center is further up the road about 10 miles across the highway from Nevada Landing and some other hotel I cannot remember the name of.

The other Hotel / Truck Stop is the Silverton which is about 10-15 miles south of the strip. Good freeway visibility and plenty of parking. It has a coffee shop and decent buffet. There also have an RV park as well.

The other option would be across from Silverton and up the street. The Beltz factory outlet has loads of parking, shopping, fast food and freeway visibilty.

Both Silverton and Beltz are good choices with minimal backtracking from center strip.

I emailed 2 Nevada members that have joined us previously at So Cal events to let them know we will be coming through the area. If I hear back from them, I'll ask them about a good location too...
