What Did You Drive Before The Avalanche?

... Oh yea - That Silverado had 210,000 and still ran like a swiss watch!! (I just wanted a new AV)

Me:
1996 GMC Sonoma Extended cab
1998 GMC Jimmy 2 door 4x4
2000 GMC Sierra Extended cab 3 door 4x4

Wife:
1993 Pontiac Grand Am 2 door
1995 Pontiac Firebird
1998 Pontiac Firebird
2002 Pontiac Firebird

GM all the way....

95 2DR Z72 Green Tahoe 150,000 miles when got my Avalanche

Here goes:

From 1985-1987 - White Pontiac LeMans LJ - parents old car for high school.

From 1987 to 1994 - Red Toyota Corolla FX - college car - cheap, cheap, cheap! Put 152,000 miles on her.

From 1993-1994 - Polaris Blue and White Kawasaki EX500 sport bike - weekends and lazy evenings - put 7,000 miles on her before I sold it and bought engagement ring for my now wife.

From 1994-1999 - White Dodge Intrepid - Serious car for the family man. Put 48,000 miles on her.

From 1999-2002 - Black 4 door Chevy Tahoe LT 2wd - starting to have some fun with a Gibson Catback exhaust, hellwig sway bar, and K&N FIPK. Put 33,000 miles on her.

Present: 2002 Victory Red Avalanche with Z66, graphite leather heated seats, and assist steps. 148 miles on her now.

While not a mid-life crisis yet, I woke up and realized that I am now 32 and never got to be 22. To heck with what my stoggy co-workers think - it's got attitude (like me), and plenty of room for my golf clubs in back! Even my Lexus owning wife approves of it (must be a little bit of rebel in her)!

Okay, let me turn on the Wayback Machine Mr. Peabody.: ;)

64 Ford Thunderbird, 390? ;D

65 Dodge Dart - three on the tree, slant 6  ;D

67 Ford Mustang - 302, FMX - Ground up restoration. ?I'm no longer out of my mind. ?I'll never do that again! ;)

72 Pontiac Ventura II, inline 6, I discovered the carb secret that was probably associated with the patents that were bought up by the major oil companies at the time. ?After accidentally incorporating it on a carb rebuild, the mileage went from 20 to 32 mpg and the thing had gobs of power. ?What's the secret? ?I have no idea! ? ??? ?I couldn't figure out what was different about the last rebuild I did. ?The car was later destroyed in one of my many "totals".

Well, I read through each post on this thread and found only one reference to someone previously owning a mini-van. Since that is what I'll be trading in on the Av, I will obviously be in the minority.

Seems like for the most part, the demographic of an Av owner is someone who previously drove a pickup, mid-size SUV, or a sporty car.

2002 Avalanche!!! ;D ;D ;D

Kronk with that Aztek and Avalanche you are an Avalanche and GM hater's wet dream ;D. I'd love to see some pics of those two side by side. Phooey on those who don't get it!!! :p

I was involved in a focus group on the Aztek (as a Montana owner) and looked at one when they hit the lots. I didn't have nice things to say about the styling to be honest when I was in the focus group. At that time it was being positioned as a Montana replacement so I was probably even more defensive about it. I just thought the outside was too Mad Max for my tastes.

So fast forward to when I was able to get inside one. IMHO, the Pontiac Aztek has one of the slickest and best laid out interiors of any vehicle on the road. They took everything that was good about the Montana, and anything that needed improvement - they did. Then they added slick features like a heads up display, sliding cargo panels and rear stereo controls.

If someone asked me to describe an Aztek today I'd say it's a lot like eating a lobster. It's not a very attractive looking beast from the outside but if you can get through its shell, the meat inside is very sweet! ;)

I know GM is committed to the Aztek and they plan a major reskin in 2003 to tone things down a bit with not quite as much lower cladding. I have to admit the Buick version is very attractive so I know that the General's heart is in the right place.

The thing I dislike about the Aztec exterior is the weird rear hatch. The front is OK and the cladding does not bother me but the rear end view looks ... well funky?

I read somewhere that the Avalanche is an Aztek on Steroids. I for one dont think so because the Aztek is absolutely hideous! Maybe its just the ugly sibling?

:)

To be honest I never really thought to put the Aztek and the Avalanche side by side and compare them, even though they seem to share some design concepts...

I have to say I really didn't think much of the Aztek when it first hit the scene...the buick looks a tad bit better....

This of course is just taken from an outside visual point of view, I have never seen the guts of an Aztek before.
