What exactly will a cracked muffler do?

I discovered the other day while my AV was idling that I was getting exhaust from under the truck.  Here I have a fairly large cracked in my muffler.

What exactly would this do to the AV?  What would be solved by getting a new one now compared to waiting til it needs inspected to have the exhaust done?

Performance?  Torque?  MPG?

I have noticed my mpg have dip recently with no real reason that I can think of.  I used to get 14 city, and now im lucky if I get 12.  Nothing has changed in my driving habits so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My inspected is due in Sept, so I have til then to decide what I want to do about the exhaust.  I currently have a Flowmaster 50 series on there now.  When I get it replaced, trying to decide if I want to stick with the 50 series, or go with the 40 series this time around.

Could get in the cab and kill you with CO posioning.
start fire if you drive over drive brush
MAke horrible sound

Go to muffler shop and have them check.

If crack in muffler maybe he can weld up.

I agree with ygmn no need to take a risk with safety and if you drop in gas mileage is due to bad muffler then you will pay for the replacement in gas savings by getting it fixed. I would not get old Flowmaster fixed though since they are not an expensive muffler, just replace.....
You might want to consider a better quality muffler if you plan to keep your AV for many years since a good quality muffler system has a lifetime warranty and you wouldn't have to pay to replace in the future if necessary such as a Corsa or Magnaflow.

I would get ahold of Flowmaster, I don't think there supposed to do that, lol.  Maybe they will warranty it, but definately get it fixed or replaced!

Buddy of mine in high school had a VW Scirocco 16v.  A rock or something smashed into his muffler. He loved it because you could hear him a mile away!
